3.9 (3839)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is a traditional Ainu village located on the southern shore of Lake Akan in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. The kotan (Ainu word for village) serves as one of the largest and most significant centers for Ainu culture in Hokkaido, home to approximately 200 Ainu residents. Established in its current location in 1965, the village was relocated from the lakeside to allow the Ainu community to preserve and share their indigenous heritage with visitors while maintaining their cultural practices and way of life.

The Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido and parts of northern Japan, with a distinct language, spiritual beliefs, and artistic traditions that date back thousands of years. Lake Akan Ainu Kotan plays a vital role in keeping these traditions alive through daily cultural activities and craftsmanship. The village is particularly renowned for Ainu wood carving, especially intricate carvings made from locally harvested timber. The main street, Ainu Kotan Street, is lined with approximately 30 shops and workshops where artisans create and sell traditional crafts including wooden sculptures, embroidered textiles, and jewelry featuring distinctive Ainu patterns and motifs.

Visitors can experience Ainu culture through several key attractions within the kotan. The Ainu Theatre Ikor presents daily performances of traditional Ainu dance, music, and rituals that have been passed down through generations. The Onnechise (a large traditional house) serves as a cultural center where guests can learn about Ainu history, customs, and spiritual beliefs centered around nature worship. Several workshops offer hands-on experiences in traditional crafts, and authentic Ainu cuisine is available at local restaurants, featuring venison, salmon, and wild mountain vegetables prepared using indigenous cooking methods.

Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is accessible from Kushiro Airport, located approximately 70 kilometers away, with bus services taking around 90 minutes to reach Lake Akan Onsen town where the kotan is situated. From Memanbetsu Airport, the journey takes approximately 90 minutes by bus, covering about 90 kilometers. The village is within walking distance from Lake Akan Onsen's hotel district. Entry to the kotan and walking along the main street is free, though individual attractions such as the theatre performances and cultural center charge separate admission fees.

The village is quite small but beautiful. There was a beautiful 3-legged fox in town. One of the local shopkeepers explained that it likely wouldn't survive the winter, as its immune system has been compromised by tourist food. Don't feed the wildlife, people!

Wandering around Ainu village to see hand-crafted souvenirs. This town is a traditional village of Ainu people with a traditional small house and cottage. It start snowing so it’s very cold outside. (11 Nov 2025)

We've been to Akan many times, and it never disappoints. But I have to say that Autumn is the best time to visit. The Onsen town is interesting to walk around in, with Ainu souvenir shops and dainty cafes lining the roads. You can take a boat to tour the Lake, and if you're lucky and the weather is good, you'll be able to see the autumn foliage around the small islands.
