Megijima Island

Megijima Island, located in the Seto Inland Sea just 4 kilometers from Takamatsu Port in Kagawa Prefecture, is a small island spanning approximately 2.66 square kilometers with a population of around 150 residents. The island has earned the nickname "Ogre Island" due to its association with the Japanese folklore tale of Momotaro, the Peach Boy, who legendarily defeated oni (demons) in a cave on the island. This cave, known as Onigashima Cave, remains one of the island's primary attractions and has shaped its cultural identity for generations.

The island gained international recognition as one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival held every three years across multiple islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Since the festival's inception in 2010, Megijima has featured permanent and temporary art installations that dot its landscape, blending modern creativity with the island's natural environment. Works by both Japanese and international artists are scattered throughout the island's villages and coastal areas, creating an open-air gallery experience that complements the traditional island lifestyle.

Visitors to Megijima can explore the Onigashima Cave, a natural cavern that extends approximately 400 meters into the hillside and features colorful demon statues and dioramas depicting scenes from the Momotaro legend. The island's compact size makes it ideal for walking or cycling, with a coastal path offering views of the Seto Inland Sea and neighboring islands. The main village near the port retains its traditional character with narrow lanes and weathered wooden houses. Several beaches provide quiet spots for relaxation, particularly on the island's northern shore.

Megijima is accessible exclusively by ferry from Takamatsu Port, with regular services operated by Meon Ferry. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes, with multiple departures throughout the day. Round-trip ferry tickets cost around ¥520 for adults. The island has no admission fee for general access, though the Onigashima Cave charges an entrance fee of approximately ¥500.
