Miura Beach

Miura Beach is situated on the eastern side of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, forming part of the coast that extends approximately 10 kilometers along Tokyo Bay. Located just 60-70 kilometers from central Tokyo, this expansive shoreline has long served as a convenient seaside destination for residents of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. The beach gained prominence as a resort area due to its proximity to the capital and its distinctive shallow waters that remain calm compared to the Pacific-facing beaches on the western side of the peninsula.

The beach area encompasses the coast from Nobi in Yokosuka to Kaneda in Miura, creating a gentle arc around Kaneda Bay that faces the Uraga Channel at the entrance to Tokyo Bay. The beaches typically remain open until late September as jellyfish rarely appear after the Bon Festival, providing a longer swimming season than many other Japanese beaches. The relatively shallow waters and gentle waves make the area particularly suited for families with children, while the consistent winds have established it as a premier location for windsurfing, even hosting World Cup competitions.

Visitors can enjoy various water activities including sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and horseback riding along the shore. The beach hosts the annual Miura Kaigan Noryo Matsuri Fireworks Festival in August, where 3,000 fireworks illuminate the summer sky, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators. In late winter, from February through March, the Miurakaigan Cherry Blossom Festival transforms the coastline with approximately 1,000 Kawazu cherry trees that bloom for a full month in deep pink, creating a striking contrast with the yellow field mustard flowers.

The beach is accessible via a five-minute walk from Miurakaigan Station on the Keikyu Kurihama Line. From Keikyu Shinagawa Station, the journey takes approximately 62 minutes on the Keikyu Kurihama Line. Alternatively, travelers can take the JR Yokosuka Line to Kurihama, then transfer to the Keikyu Kurihama Line. The area offers ample parking for those arriving by car. Admission to the beach itself is free, though fees apply for parking and equipment rentals for water sports activities.
