Momijidani Suspension Bridge

Momijidani Suspension Bridge spans 320 meters across the Shiobara Dam Lake in Nasushiobara City, making it the longest pier-less pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. Opened in April 1999 with a construction cost of approximately 6 million USD, the bridge was engineered without a traditional stiffening girder, instead using sideways wire ropes to maintain structural integrity. This innovative design creates a distinctive walking experience where the bridge naturally sways with wind and movement.

The bridge serves as a gateway to the Shiobara Onsen area, a historic hot spring village with over 1,200 years of history. Located in the eastern part of Shiobara Onsen Village, it has become one of the region's premier attractions within the Shiobara Valley, which is renowned throughout Tochigi Prefecture for its natural beauty. The area holds particular significance in Japanese literary history, having attracted numerous writers since the Meiji period, with literary monuments scattered throughout the valley.

Visitors cross the bridge suspended high above the emerald waters of Shiobara Dam Lake, with 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valley. The middle section features a lattice-style floor that allows views straight through to the lake below, adding an element of thrill to the crossing. The bridge's peak season is autumn, when the valley transforms into brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, with the foliage reflected in the lake waters creating striking mirror images.

The bridge has earned official recognition as a "Lover's Sanctuary" or romantic proposal spot, and on the opposite shore stands a symbolic monument carved from local cedar featuring a pair of Kuma hawks, rare wild birds native to the mountains surrounding the bridge. A heart-shaped bench provides a photo opportunity near this monument.

Momijidani Suspension Bridge is located approximately 50 minutes by bus from JR Nasushiobara Station, which is 70 minutes from Tokyo via Tohoku Shinkansen. Buses depart from Nasushiobara Station and stop directly at the Momijidani Suspension Bridge stop, requiring about a 5-minute walk to reach the bridge entrance. The route is covered by the JR Nagano Niigata Pass. Alternatively, visitors can drive from Nasushiobara Station, with parking available at the site. For those traveling by private vehicle, the bridge is accessible via National Route 400.
