Mount Tarumae

Mount Tarumae is one of Hokkaido's most active volcanoes, offering a unique and thrilling adventure for those who visit. Located near Lake Shikotsu, this striking mountain provides a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the surrounding area with its rugged landscape and the stark, lunar-like surface near its summit.

What makes Mount Tarumae particularly fascinating is its accessibility. Unlike many active volcanoes, Tarumae can be climbed in just a few hours, making it an achievable trek for many visitors. The hike up the mountain is not just a physical journey; it's a visual experience. As you ascend, the lush greenery of Hokkaido's landscape transitions to a more barren, moon-like terrain, offering a glimpse into the raw power of nature.

The summit of Mount Tarumae presents a breathtaking view that is hard to match, with panoramic sights of the surrounding landscapes, including Lake Shikotsu. For those interested in geology and natural phenomena, the volcano's active crater, with its continuous plumes of smoke, is a compelling highlight.

What other travelers are saying about Mount Tarumae

Mount Tarumae is an easy and enjoyable mountain for casual hiking. Access to the parking area can be busy during the summer season, and the gravel road means low-clearance vehicles should take extra care. The hiking route offers dynamic volcanic terrain and wide-open views, making it a fun and rewarding climb despite its relatively easy access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Tarumae stands approximately 1,041 meters (3,415 feet) tall. Despite not being the tallest peak in the area, its distinct shape makes it easily recognizable.

Mount Tarumae last erupted in 1982. It is considered one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with notable eruptions occurring roughly every 50 to 60 years over the past few centuries.

The hike to the summit can take between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and the trail conditions. It's considered a relatively easy climb, making it suitable for beginners and experienced hikers alike.

For most of the year, regular hiking gear is sufficient. However, during the winter months or if you plan to explore more challenging parts of the mountain, specialized equipment like crampons may be necessary due to snow and ice.

Given its status as an active volcano, it's important to check for any volcanic activity advisories or restrictions before your climb. Additionally, always respect the natural environment by staying on designated paths and carrying out all trash.

Mt. Tarumae, one of Hokkaido's iconic active volcanoes, offers an unforgettable experience for adventure seekers and nature lovers. The hike to the summit is relatively short, taking around 1-2 hours, but it rewards you with stunning views of Lake Shikotsu, the surrounding mountains, and the impressive volcanic crater. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for beginners with a moderate level of fitness. However, the terrain near the crater can be rocky, so proper hiking shoes are recommended. The sight of the steaming vents and rugged volcanic landscape is both thrilling and humbling, making it a must-visit for those exploring the natural beauty of Hokkaido. While the best times to visit are late spring to early fall, Mt. Tarumae offers a unique charm in every season. Just be sure to check volcanic activity updates before your hike. Whether you’re seeking breathtaking views or a memorable outdoor adventure, Mt. Tarumae does not disappoint.

We climbed this today in 30 degree heat. I’m an unfit 54 year old. We were not equipped for the dry conditions (no walking boots or sticks) which resulted in lots of skidding and falls on the way back down. It’s an amazing view at the top but don’t let your husband reassure you that trainers will be fine. It took 3hrs but we headed back down after the shrine rather than doing the whole crater.

We've been here in mid-september 2017. The climb is relatively short and not that hard. Once you leave the forest you can see the amazing view of lake Shikotsu and the ocean. The summit was very windy but the view of the huge lava dome was absolutely stunning and even scary. Drive carefully in the long unpaved road that reaches the parking lot. Allocate 3-4 hours for the trip, including spending time at the summit and walking around the rim.

Very easy to climb from the car park. Car park gets full in summer time in the weekend. So better be there earlier morning. Peak of East was very windy, you will need a jacket. Good things about Tarumae is There will be beautiful view of Lake Shiretoko all the way to the top. After exercise, recommendation is hot spring to Shiretoko and Marukoma. 1000jpy each but close for visitors by 15:00.
