Mount Yotei is a 1,898-meter stratovolcano located in southwestern Hokkaido, Japan, approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Sapporo. Often called "Ezo Fuji" (meaning Hokkaido's Fuji) due to its remarkably symmetrical cone shape that mirrors Mount Fuji, the mountain dominates the landscape of the Niseko region. The volcano last erupted around 1,000 years ago and has since become one of Hokkaido's most iconic natural landmarks.
The mountain holds significant cultural importance as part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park and serves as a symbol of the Niseko area. Its near-perfect conical form has made it a beloved subject in Japanese landscape photography and art. The surrounding alpine environment supports diverse flora and fauna, with the summit crater containing a small pond and offering panoramic views across Hokkaido, including Lake Toya, the Sea of Japan, and on clear days, even Mount Fuji itself in the distance.
Hiking Mount Yotei is the primary visitor activity, with the main climbing season running from July to September when the trails are snow-free. The most popular route is the Hirafu Trail, which takes approximately 5 to 7 hours to ascend and 3 to 4 hours to descend. The climb is considered moderately challenging and suitable for fit hikers with mountain experience.
Winter mountaineering and backcountry skiing attract advanced climbers from December to April, though these activities require proper equipment and experience due to harsh conditions. The mountain is also a spectacular backdrop for activities in the Niseko resort area, including hot spring bathing and scenic drives.
Car rentals from Sapporo provide more flexibility for accessing different routes. There is no admission fee to climb the mountain, though climbers are expected to register at trailhead boxes for safety purposes. Basic facilities exist at major trailheads, but climbers should bring sufficient food, water, and appropriate gear as there are no services on the mountain itself.
Access to Mount Yotei's trailheads is easiest from the town of Kutchan or the Niseko Hirafu resort area. The Hirafu trailhead is located about 15 minutes by car from Niseko Hirafu village. Visitors typically reach the area by taking the JR Hakodate Line from Sapporo to Kutchan Station, a journey of approximately 2 hours, then continuing by local bus or taxi to the trailheads.
