Nakagusuku Castle Ruins is a great place to explore at your own pace. The site is quite large, with sprawling stone walls and open areas that you can freely walk through. It’s easy to spend a good amount of time just wandering around and taking in the different sections.
There isn’t much in terms of a visitor center or detailed information on-site, so it helps to read up a bit beforehand if you want more historical context. That said, the ruins themselves are impressive enough to stand on their own, and the elevated position gives you some really nice views of the surrounding area.
It’s a simple but rewarding stop if you enjoy historical sites and don’t mind a more self-guided experience. I also remember there used to be an abandoned hotel complex nearby that had a bit of a haunted reputation, though it’s been torn down in recent years.
Beautiful ruins of Nakagusuku Castle. There's a golf cart provided so you can ride up to the entrance of the main castle instead of hiking up. The view of the island from the top is breathtaking. Today, it consists mostly of walls and omoats but here are information telling you what aprr of the castle you are now in. There's also a history behind it.
A day after a rough typhoon, we visited. They have a transport to get you to the start of the route. Some areas were closed off including some wall tops I walked along many years ago. That said, the wind at the top level helps cool you and the view is lovely.
Peaceful, interesting castle ruins with amazing views. can spend about 1.5 hours if you explore everywhere. They drive you up in a golf cart and u walk your way down following a route, through the ruins.
Only negative is that it is a bit pricey for the experience, 500¥/person. There are other castle ruins that are free with similar experiences in okinawa.
