I recently returned from a Costa cruise that included a stop in Ishigaki, Okinawa – a small, unspoiled gem that completely stole my heart. While the cruise itself offered comfort and beautiful sea views, the real highlight was docking in this peaceful Japanese town.
What made the trip unforgettable was the authentic Japanese food. Away from the busy tourist spots, I found small, family-run eateries serving incredible Okinawan soba, freshly caught tuna, and the most flavorful goya champuru. Every meal felt like a warm welcome into the local culture – simple, fresh, and made with care. Even the bento boxes on the ship’s excursions couldn’t compare to the homemade tofu and tempura I enjoyed in Ishigaki’s quiet backstreets.
The town itself is charmingly low-key. Instead of crowded attractions, I wandered along gentle coastlines, visited a small market where vendors smiled and offered samples of sea salt cookies, and took a slow walk to a nearby shrine. There’s a sense of unhurried gratitude here that’s hard to find in bigger ports.
Costa’s organization was smooth, and the crew was friendly, but Ishigaki was the soul of the trip. If you love authentic Japanese cuisine and prefer heartfelt, quiet exploration over loud sightseeing, this itinerary is a true treasure. I left with a full stomach and a very happy heart.
Southernmost Japanese island next to Taiwan. Difficult to get around without a rental car. Most of the tourists are Japanese, I did not see any foreigners. A small island, shops closed early and people spoke little English.
Beautiful beaches. City lacks touristic infrastructure as cafe, electronic payments, English signs, food variety in the restaurants.
A relaxing slice of paradise. You do need a rental car or own transport as mentioned also the speed limits are low and everyone obeys. Dozens of scenic locations on the coast. Excellent diving.
Great Island. The sea and the sunset are beautifu.
