Nakajima Park is one of Sapporo's most cherished urban green spaces, located approximately 1.5 kilometers south of the city center in the Chuo Ward. It is a large and beautifully maintained park that serves as a cultural, recreational, and natural retreat for both residents and visitors throughout all four seasons.

The park covers an area of approximately 36 hectares, making it one of the largest urban parks in central Sapporo. A small lake, open lawns, forested walking paths, and several important cultural buildings are spread across its grounds in a relaxed and unhurried layout.

At the heart of the park sits Nakajima Park Pond, a tranquil body of water surrounded by willows and seasonal plantings. During summer, rowboats can be rented on the pond, while in winter the frozen surface is occasionally used for skating and ice activities.

The park is one of Sapporo's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, drawing large crowds every May when the trees lining its paths come into full bloom. The timing of cherry blossoms in Sapporo arrives notably later than the rest of Japan, making it a welcome final celebration of spring for visitors who have already missed the season further south.

Autumn transforms the park into a vivid display of momiji foliage, with the pond reflecting the surrounding red and gold trees in a particularly photogenic scene. The park remains beautiful and walkable well into November, longer than many comparable green spaces in Hokkaido.

One of the most significant buildings within the park is Hasso-an, a traditional tea house dating back to the Edo period. Originally built in Fushimi, Kyoto, the structure was dismantled and relocated to Sapporo in 1915, making it one of the oldest wooden structures in Hokkaido and a rare piece of classical Japanese architecture on the northern island.

Adjacent to Hasso-an is Hoheikan, a beautifully preserved Meiji-era wooden guesthouse built in 1880 to accommodate imperial and government visitors to Hokkaido. The elegant Western-influenced structure with its distinctive white facade is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan and one of the finest examples of early Meiji architecture in the country.

The park also contains the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara, one of the finest concert halls in Japan, which opened in 1997. Home to the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, the hall is celebrated for its outstanding acoustics and hosts classical music performances, recitals, and cultural events throughout the year.

Kitara has become a cultural anchor for the Nakajima Park area, attracting music lovers and helping establish the surrounding neighborhood as one of Sapporo's most refined and livable districts. The building's exterior, set within the park greenery, is architecturally striking in its own right.

The neighborhoods surrounding the park, particularly to the east and south, are home to a quiet concentration of independent cafes, small restaurants, and boutique hotels that cater to a more relaxed and locally oriented crowd compared to the busier areas around Sapporo Station or Susukino.

The park is directly accessible via Nakajima-koen Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line, just two stops south of Odori Station. The station exit opens almost directly onto the park grounds, making it one of the most conveniently reached green spaces in the entire city.
