Susukino Entertainment District

Susukino is Sapporo's most vibrant and energetic entertainment district, located just south of Odori Park in the Chuo Ward. It is widely considered the largest and liveliest nightlife district in all of Japan north of Tokyo and the area that truly comes alive after the sun goes down.

The district centers around the intersection of Minami 5-jo and Nishi 4-chome, marked by the famous Susukino intersection with its enormous illuminated signboards and neon displays that have become one of the most recognizable nighttime images of Sapporo. The glow of the signs reflected on winter snow is one of the city's most atmospheric sights.

Susukino contains over 4,000 bars, restaurants, clubs, and entertainment establishments packed into a compact and walkable grid of streets. The density of options is extraordinary, ranging from standing ramen bars and casual izakaya to sophisticated cocktail lounges, jazz clubs, and live music venues.

The district is the undisputed center of Sapporo's ramen culture. The famous Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley), a narrow lane lined with small ramen shops operating since the 1950s, sits within the heart of Susukino and is one of the most atmospheric places in Japan to eat a bowl of miso ramen, the style most closely associated with Sapporo.

Sapporo miso ramen originated in this city in the 1960s and remains the most celebrated regional ramen style in Hokkaido. The rich, butter-enriched miso broth topped with corn, bean sprouts, and chashu pork is best experienced in one of the small, counter-only shops that line Ramen Yokocho.

Beyond ramen, Susukino is an exceptional destination for Hokkaido seafood. Numerous restaurants and seafood izakaya in the district serve fresh crab, sea urchin, salmon roe, scallops, and oysters sourced directly from Hokkaido's surrounding waters. The quality and freshness of seafood available in Susukino is among the best in Japan.

The district also has a strong jazz and live music culture, with several respected jazz bars and live houses operating within the area. Sapporo has one of Japan's most dedicated jazz communities, and Susukino sits at its nighttime center with venues that have been running for decades.

During the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, Susukino hosts its own separate ice sculpture exhibition along Nishi 4-chome, with dozens of large illuminated ice sculptures lining the street. 

The Susukino ice displays run alongside the main snow sculpture event in Odori Park, making the two areas complementary destinations during the festival period.

The streets of Susukino also contain a significant concentration of tanuki (raccoon dog) imagery and statues, reflecting a long-standing local tradition associating the trickster animal with the good fortune of merchants and entertainment businesses. 

The Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, a long covered shopping street running along the northern edge of Susukino, takes its name directly from this tradition.

Tanukikoji is one of the oldest shopping streets in Sapporo, stretching 約900 meters across 7 blocks and housing hundreds of shops selling everything from discount goods and electronics to traditional crafts and Hokkaido food products. 

Susukino is directly served by Susukino Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line, one stop south of Odori Station. The station exit opens directly onto the main intersection of the district, placing visitors immediately in the center of the action at any hour of the day or night.
