Naoshima Bath "I♥︎湯"

Naoshima Bath "I♥湯" (pronounced "I Love Yu," with "yu" meaning hot water in Japanese) opened in 2009 as a fully functional public bathhouse created by artist Shinro Ohtake. Located in Honmura village, the facility serves both as a contemporary art installation and a working sento (public bath) for local residents and visitors.

Ohtake transformed a traditional Japanese bathhouse into an immersive art environment using his signature collage technique. The exterior features colorful mosaic tiles, found objects, and mixed materials covering the building's facade.

Inside, every surface, including walls, ceilings, changing rooms, and bathing areas incorporates Ohtake's artwork. The interior combines paintings, tiles, sculptures, photographs, and assemblages, creating a dense visual experience. Elements include an elephant sculpture, cartoon characters, tropical plants, and eclectic imagery drawn from global pop culture and Japanese traditions.

Visitors experience the bath as both artwork and a functional bathing facility. Unlike museum-based installations, this requires following standard Japanese bathhouse etiquette: removing shoes at the entrance, undressing in gender-separated changing rooms, washing thoroughly at shower stations before entering the communal baths, and bathing completely nude. The bathing area contains both indoor hot water pools and an outdoor bath. Towels and basic bathing supplies are available for purchase or rental.

Naoshima Bath is located in Honmura village, a 5-minute walk from Honmura Port or 10 minutes by town bus from Miyanoura Port. The bathhouse is near the Art House Project reception center. Walking or cycling is the most practical way to reach the facility from either port.

Admission costs ¥660 for adults and ¥310 for children ages 15 and under. This includes entry to the bathing facilities. Towel rental costs an additional ¥100 for a small towel or ¥200 for a large towel. Soap and shampoo are provided. The facility has coin lockers for valuables. Photography is prohibited inside the bathhouse.

What other travelers are saying about Naoshima Bath "I♥︎湯"

I ❤️ Yu (直島銭湯)(直島銭湯) I ❤️ Yu was a surprise highlight of my trip. After a day of walking and museum-hopping, soaking in the hot water felt perfect and healing. Facilities are clean and cozy, and locals were friendly and welcoming. It’s rare to find a public bath with good vibes and easy access for travelers. If you want to feel more like a local and relax, this bathhouse is worth a visit.

Really unique public bath. The whole place is an art piece and the tiles in the pool are so beautiful. This is clearly the owner's creative expression and this bath feels special. It's pretty small with only one type of water pool but totally worth the visit. If you don't bring your own towel you have to buy one here as you can't rent but they're cool and a nice souvenir worth the price. Highly recommend this place.
This has been the most beautiful sento I’ve ever visited. The decor is colorful, with plants, neon lights, and more. It’s worth taking a relaxing break to enjoy this place with so many lovely details. You can really see the care put into choosing each item. On top of that, the service is very kind and friendly. A wonderful experience!
TATTOOS OK BATH ALERT!!! No tattoo cover stickers required. You can bare it all. I have lived in Japan for 8 years and this is my first sento (public bath) experience. I was always refused thanks to my tattoos. No need to worry. Mine are visible and nobody cared here! Very cool place and thankful I got to experience this after nearly a decade.
We visited in the evening for a bath and it was certainly a nice experience after a day on the island. The same amenities as any other Japanese bath but in a unique setting, something to admire whilst you soak! The lady and man at the counter were very sweet and welcoming. You’ll need to bring your own towel, which you can also buy there if without one. Your ticket, towel and drinks purchase is done on the machine at the entrance.
