We love this sake so dropped in while driving from Sendai to Niigata.
A lovely place to visit and if we had more time would have done a brewery tour.
The shop does tasting (except for drivers of course!!) and their sake is truly delicious.
The staff was very kind and helpful.
We bought a whole box of sake and look forward to tasting more.
I had a very pleasant experience. The tour was available in English. Zak provided a very good tour and was also very knowledgeable in leading me through the tasting session. I would recommend
Niida Honke is a historic sake brewery founded in 1711, located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This traditional Japanese sake distillery is renowned for producing premium organic sake and offers authentic cultural experiences for visitors interested in Japanese brewing traditions.
Niida Honke is one of only two breweries in Japan using 100% organic rice. It holds JAS Organic Certification and achieved Japan's first Regenerative Organic Certified status in 2025. The brewery uses traditional Kimoto fermentation with natural yeast and water from its own property.
Brewery tours cost 1,000 yen per person with sake tastings included, or 500 yen per person without tastings. These rates apply to groups of one to ten people. Note that sake tastings are only available to visitors aged 20 or older, in accordance with Japanese drinking age laws.
Niida Honke is located in Tamuramachi, approximately 20 minutes by car from JR Koriyama Station. A taxi or rental car is the most convenient option as the brewery is situated in a rural area surrounded by rice paddies. Public transportation options are limited, so driving is recommended for visitors.
The brewery shop offers a variety of sake labels including their flagship Shizenshu brand, Odayaka Junmai Ginjo, and the special Hyakunen Kijoshu. Beyond sake, visitors can purchase koji-based fermented products including chocolates and sweets. The shop also provides tasting opportunities to sample different sake varieties before purchasing.
