Okami Park, Hyogo

Okami Park sits on a scenic hillside overlooking the Sea of Japan in Kasumi, part of Kami Town in northern Hyogo Prefecture. Originally known as Itsukishima, this coastal location was once an island that became connected to the mainland through the natural accumulation of river sediment over centuries. Historical records indicate that during the Edo period (1603-1867), sailors used the elevated vantage point to observe waves and wind conditions before setting sail, making it an important maritime observation post for the region.

The park forms part of the San'in Coast Geopark, Japan's largest geopark and a UNESCO-certified geological heritage site. This designation recognizes the area's spectacular coastal formations shaped by the powerful winds and waves of the Sea of Japan. The park's significance extends beyond its geological features, as it has been officially designated a scenic spot on the Kasumi Coast by the Japanese government. The dramatic meeting of land and sea here creates one of the most photographed landscapes in northern Hyogo.

Visitors come to Okami Park primarily for its panoramic coastal views, particularly at sunset when the park is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 sunset viewing locations. The centerpiece of the park is a distinctive stone lantern positioned to frame views of Shiroishi Island in the background, creating an iconic photo composition. The park offers seasonal displays throughout the year, with cherry blossoms transforming the grounds in spring and day sedge colonies blooming in early summer. During winter months, strong north winds and rough seas produce a rare natural phenomenon called "wave flowers" where white foam rises dramatically from the ocean surface.

Okami Park is located approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Kasumi Station, making it easily accessible for day visitors. The station itself can be reached via a 30-minute local train ride from JR Kinosaki Onsen Station, a popular hot spring resort town. For those driving, the park is situated near Kasumi Fishing Port in the Kasumi Ward of Kami Town. The park is open year-round with free admission, allowing visitors unrestricted access to its coastal views and walking paths.
