Hakone’s Pola Museum of Art is a nature and art wonder. Opened in 2002, the museum is a treasure trove of Western and Japanese art with over 10,000 pieces collected by the Pola family over decades. Imagine walking through a space where Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh hang alongside Yokoyama Taikan.

The building itself is a work of art—designed to blend into the forest, it has glass walls to let in natural light and the art feels alive. The building is mostly underground with the roof camouflaged by the forest so you feel connected to the natural world and the art inside.

Inside, you’ll find Impressionist paintings, one of the biggest in Japan. Japanese ceramics, sculptures and glass art too. A love for Western and Eastern art.

What makes the Pola Museum of Art special is that it brings together different cultures, eras and styles under one roof and keeps you connected to the Hakone landscape.

Beautiful building (wonderful architecture). The museum combined both japanese and western artwork (very nice indeed). Nice sculpture trail in a nearby private exclusive forest (it is very dry in the winter and we wish there were more sculptors along the way). The only disappointing thing was the fact that there weren't enough works of art and the exhibitions were too small.

good museum !!! theres free shuttle from gora station, and the museum architecture itself is just sooooo beautiful. Exhibiting impressionism art pieces and art related to the precious beauty of Hakone ! Impressive ! the nature trail is so enjoyable as well, gained peace and calmness🫶🏻

A truly stunning and deeply touching museum that blends arts, architecture and nature in a thoughtful and serene way. One of those places that stays with you long even after you leave. Highly recommended.

Visited on rainy day and have lunch at its restaurant. Everything is great including the exhibitions, gift shop and restaurant. Would like to come again on a sunny day to enjoy the forest walk outside the museum.

Amazing museum, one of the nicest I’ve been to both because of it’s selection of art, it’s architecture, and it’s natural surroundings. Very convenient free shuttle from Gora station every 30 minutes. Today was a rainy day but the museum is definitely enjoyable anyway, we also walked the natural path around it and it was beautiful in rainy and cloudy weather. Only downside for me was the restaurants vegetarian/vegan food. Only one option which actually was a plate with meat removed so it was not very filling at all (spent ¥6.000 for 2 people).
