Hakone Ropeway

4.2 (331)Point Of InterestEstablishment

The Hakone Ropeway is an unforgettable ride through the skies, offering jaw-dropping views that will leave you speechless. Imagine being lifted high above the ground, gliding effortlessly over a landscape that seems to stretch on forever. Below, volcanic valleys puff out steam and lakes shimmer in the sunlight while all around you, mountains rise up, creating a panorama that’s nothing short of spectacular.

This ropeway spans over 4 kilometers, connecting Sounzan Station to Togendai Station, with a must-see stop at Owakudani—an active volcanic valley where the earth hisses and bubbles. Here, you can gaze down at the dramatic landscape and maybe even try the famous black eggs, a local delicacy that’s believed to add years to your life.

But the real star of the show? Mount Fuji. On a clear day, you can see its iconic peak towering over everything, a sight that’s as majestic as it gets. The ropeway’s glass-bottomed cabins take the experience to another level, giving you a view straight down to the ground, making it feel like you’re floating through the air.

I reached Sounzan Station by cable car from Gora, and it was such a chill stop! You can sit back, relax, and check out some cute merch while waiting. From here, you can continue your trip using the Hakone Ropeway. Totally recommend getting the Hakone Pass — it’s super worth it since you can hop on all the transport modes without extra cost.

We took the ropeway from Sounzan to Togendai Station. Very cool views and you can't beat seeing Owakudani from above. There were plenty of seats in the gondola and we appreciated that they did not pack too many people into the car. Highly recommend!

Want to get out of the Tokyo and have a very unique and eye opening experience? Hakone didn’t disappoint! The doorway was so beautiful and was incredible to see the sulfur pits, gorgeous view of mt Fuji, and the surrounding forest! You can get on and off at the sulfur pits and at the lake which has stunning trails going around the entire lake. Would 💯 recommend!

Sounzan Station is an important interchange between the Hakone Cable Car and Ropeway, offering plenty of value to visitors. The station’s observation area is located at a high elevation, providing a stunning panoramic view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. After enjoying the cable car ride, it’s easy to transition to the ropeway, making the journey very comfortable. A particular highlight is the foot bath located in the observation area. Relaxing in the foot bath while enjoying the beautiful mountain views is the perfect way to unwind. It’s a soothing experience that allows you to take in nature at a slower pace. There is also a small shop at the station where you can enjoy snacks and drinks while taking a break. Sounzan Station is an ideal spot to stop and relax during your Hakone sightseeing, offering breathtaking views and the perfect opportunity to enjoy some peaceful time in the foot bath.
