Sakuragaoka Shrine, Sendai

4.1 (954)Shinto ShrineTourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipAssociation Or OrganizationPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Sakuragaoka Daijingu Shrine stands within Nishi Park, Sendai's oldest public park established in 1875. The shrine derives its significance from its historical connection to the powerful Date clan and its spiritual lineage from Ise Grand Shrine, Japan's most sacred Shinto site. Founded in 1621 by Date Masamune, the legendary feudal lord of Sendai, the shrine was established when Masamune invited a branch spirit from Ise Grand Shrine to be enshrined at a location originally known as Shinmei-gu in Aramaki Village. The shrine was relocated in 1872 and again moved to its current location in 1926 during the Taisho period.

The shrine's name, Daijingu, reflects its status as an important spiritual site enshrining Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess and highest deity in Shinto belief, along with Toyouke Okami and 16 other deities. This connection to Ise Grand Shrine gives it particular religious importance among local worshippers. The architectural features include a distinctive copper torii gate at the entrance and a wooden torii gate constructed in 2012.

Visitors experience the shrine within the scenic context of Nishi Park, which was historically called Sakuragaoka Park during the Meiji era in honor of its cherry blossoms. The park surrounding the shrine serves as one of Sendai's premier cherry blossom viewing locations, with blooms typically appearing in April. During the spring season, the area becomes particularly lively with food stalls and festival atmosphere. The park also features several cultural attractions including a preserved steam locomotive, a 7.4-meter tall Kokeshi doll statue, monuments to poet Matsuo Basho, and a historic plum tree brought from Korea by Date Masamune 400 years ago. Special cherry blossom-themed goshuin (shrine stamps) are available during the sakura festival.

The shrine maintains a tranquil atmosphere despite its urban setting and modest size. Visitors can expect a peaceful environment suitable for morning walks and contemplative worship. Admission to the shrine is free. The shrine is located at 1-1 Sakuragaoka Park, Aoba-ku, Sendai and is most easily accessed via the Sendai Subway Tozai Line, with Omachi Nishi-koen Station approximately 5 minutes away on foot.

What other travelers are saying about Sakuragaoka Shrine, Sendai

A small pretty shrine located in the beginning of the park. There were not much happening in October, but the calmness of the shrine was much appreciated! There were limited goshuins available which were very pretty.

This place has been set to celebrate sakura bloom. Most of local enjoy eeating and drinking here. There are many pop up store like Takoyaki, Soba, strawberry etc.
Sakuragaoka Shrine is a Japanese shrine located in Sendai West Park and famous for its sakura trees planted around it. The shrine is not large, but it is surrounded by sakura blossoms that make it feel like a fairy tale around Late Mar to April. I was lucky enough to see one of the sakura trees already started blooming in mid-February, which was a rare sight.

Small shrine just beside the Sendai West Park. Visitors could make wishes by making an offering. A car park is also available to the visitors.
