The Eiichi Shibusawa Memorial Hall stands in Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture, the birthplace of one of Japan's most influential industrialists. Completed in 1995, this museum commemorates Eiichi Shibusawa (1840-1931), widely recognized as the father of Japanese capitalism and modern business. Born in Fukaya on March 16, 1840, Shibusawa played a transformative role in Japan's rapid modernization during the Meiji era, establishing the country's first modern bank and laying the groundwork for its economic infrastructure. His legacy is honored nationally, with his portrait appearing on Japan's 10,000 yen banknote from 2024.

Shibusawa's achievements are extraordinary in scope, having founded or contributed to more than 500 companies and economic organizations, along with approximately 600 educational institutions and welfare organizations. His business philosophy, which emphasized the unity of morality and economics based on Confucian principles, shaped modern Japanese corporate culture. Notable among his ventures was the Japan Brick Manufacturing Company in Fukaya, which produced the distinctive red bricks used in the construction of Tokyo Station in 1914.

The memorial hall presents Shibusawa's life through nine thematic exhibition areas arranged chronologically. Visitors can examine original documents, letters, manuscripts, photographs, and personal artifacts that trace his journey from a farmer's son in rural Fukaya to a pivotal figure in national development. A highlight is the second-floor lecture room featuring a lifelike 153-centimeter android replica of Shibusawa that delivers an eight-minute lecture on his theory of uniting morality and economics. The capacity for this presentation is 40 people per session. The museum also preserves recordings of Shibusawa's actual voice, offering an authentic connection to this historical figure.

The facility is part of the broader Rongo-no-Sato (Village of the Analects of Confucius) area, which includes other significant sites such as the former Shibusawa residence "Nakanchi" where he was born, and the Seishido building constructed to celebrate his 77th birthday. Together, these locations provide comprehensive insight into Shibusawa's formative years and lifelong dedication to Confucian ethical principles in business.

Admission to the memorial hall is free. The site is approximately 6 kilometers from JR Fukaya Station, accessible via the Kururin community bus, though service frequency is limited. The Shibusawa Eiichi Analects Village Circulation Bus operates 2 buses daily on weekdays and 3 on weekends, connecting major Shibusawa-related sites including the memorial hall, the former residence, and Fukaya Station. Visitors typically spend 2-3 hours exploring the museum.

The staff were so kind that I would recommend it to my friends! However, there are not many buses, so I went from Fukaya Station on the folding bicycle I had brought with me. It's about a 30-minute ride, and since it's along a main road with few twists and turns, you won't get lost, making it ideal for touring. On the other hand, I recommend going by car if you're traveling with children, in a large group, or if you're not confident in your stamina. Admission is free, so it's a good place to stop by for a break during a tour or drive.
