Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort stands as the crown jewel of Japan's largest interconnected ski area, occupying 61 hectares of pristine mountain terrain in Nagano Prefecture. Located within Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park at elevations reaching 2,000 meters, this resort earned international recognition when it hosted the first-ever Olympic snowboarding competition during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. The legendary Olympic Trail, where snowboard men's and women's giant slalom and alpine skiing slalom events took place, remains open to the public, allowing visitors to experience the same slopes where Olympic history was made.

The resort's significance extends beyond its Olympic heritage to its position as the largest single ski area within Shiga Kogen's massive 18-resort network. Yakebitaiyama features 20 courses spanning 16.3 kilometers of skiable terrain, including the impressive 2,430-meter Panorama Trail that offers sweeping views of the Northern Alps and Hokushin Five Mountains. The resort's high-altitude location and inland climate create ideal conditions for "Platinum Powder" – exceptionally dry, light snow that has made Japanese powder legendary among international skiers and snowboarders.

Visitors can access the mountain via two modern gondolas and three additional lifts, including the No.1 Gondola that transports guests to the 2,000-meter summit of Mount Yakebitai. The resort caters to all skill levels with terrain distributed as 15% beginner, 75% intermediate, and 10% advanced, though special conditions occasionally open challenging areas like the steep Yakebi Wall with its 39-degree maximum incline and the expansive 111-meter-wide Yakebi Valley. Advanced riders can explore designated tree-run sections, making this one of the few areas in Shiga Kogen offering off-piste skiing opportunities.

The three-building Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel complex provides ski-in/ski-out accommodation directly at the base, with the East Building offering luxury rooms with slope views, the South Building providing direct gondola access, and the West Building featuring traditional Japanese outdoor baths exclusive to guests. The resort's Family Snow Park offers safe snow activities for non-skiers, including snow bikes, sleds, and tubes in a securely fenced area.

Transportation to Yakebitaiyama requires taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano Station (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes), followed by a local train to Yudanaka Station (1 hour), and finally a bus journey of 1 hour 15 minutes to the resort. Direct buses operate from Tokyo Station during winter season. All-mountain lift passes covering Shiga Kogen's entire 18-ski-area network provide exceptional value, with single-area Yakebitaiyama day passes available for those preferring to focus on one location. The nearby Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, famous for its hot spring-bathing macaques, sits just a short drive down the mountain, making Yakebitaiyama an ideal base for exploring both Olympic skiing heritage and Japan's unique wildlife attractions.

What other travelers are saying about Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort, Yamanouchi

Visited on a very cold Thursday. Most of the cafes were unavailable due to school visits. Lower slopes were jam packed with school groups but upper slopes weren't busy. Good variety of terrain and ski lifts with options to transit to neighbouring resorts.

One of the highest terrain snow resorts in Honshu. The powder here is incredible when the conditions are right. Very broad with many areas interlinked via chairlift. Nightlife is limited compared with other resorts around Japan. It is relatively close to other large resorts like Nozawa, Myoko... Definitly worth a look when the snow is puking.

Excellent snow conditions, large run variety, and short chairlift wait. There wasn't any ice on the runs even in the afternoon. Mont Tremblant, Canada is where I regularly ski and I enjoyed it here more!

This is Yakibitaiyama Snow Resort located at the northern end of the Shiga Kogen Central Area and the largest in the Shiga Kogen. When I visit Shiga Kogen by car, I sometimes get confused about where to park. It's quite difficult to find the car park even trying to use Google Maps. Here the Yakibitaiyama has a couple of large car parks which are free and easy to use. I visited on 2nd April 2023, it was cold enough in the early morning and the snow surface was in good condition. People enjoy the cherry blossoms and warm spring at the foot of the mountains but we can enjoy skiing at here in Shiga Kogen! Revisited on 24 Feb 2024, it was snowy last night and the snow covered the icy slopes, well it's a very difficult condition but enjoyed anyway. Also enjoyed other snow resorts connected by trails from Yakibitaiya.

Terrible. I've been anticipating to visit for 1 year and only 2 green slopes and chairlifts are open today. Snow is too icy, there is not intention to use the snow cannons. I paid for the full price for the ski pass but I can use less than half the chairlifts; 2 out the 15 ski slopes. Don't visit.
