Shinkyo Bridge

Shinkyo Bridge is a fascinating piece of history and architecture in Nikko. This bridge, stretching 28 meters across the Daiya River, was originally built in the 8th century, though the structure we see today dates back to 1636. The brilliant red color of the bridge isn’t just for show—it symbolizes protection against evil, adding a layer of meaning to its already impressive presence.

Legends say that the Buddhist monk Shodo Shonin, who founded Nikko, was helped by two serpents to cross the river at this very spot, marking the bridge as a sacred site. Historically, Shinkyo was only for the shogun and imperial messengers, making it a symbol of power and spiritual connection.

Today, anyone can walk across the bridge for a small fee, offering a chance to connect with centuries of history. The bridge is part of Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage site, a testament to its cultural and spiritual importance.

Beautiful red bridge with the stunning fall colours as the backdrop and running river foreground made it a popular tourist spot. Consider visiting it early in the morning or after 3.30pm. Less tourists and cleaner photo. Crossing the bridge did incur a cost.

We just want to see the bridge itself because it is one of the recommended places here in Nikko. If you want to cross the bridge, there's a fee. We weren't able to try it since we still need to go to Toshogu Shrine. Maybe we will try again next time!!

Such a cute bridge in a truly beautiful area! This entire region was a joy to explore on foot. Every discovered nook and cranny brought a new delight to the senses. Each turn more enjoyable than the last. Perfect place to sit and enjoy a picnic or simply relax and listen to the river tell you stories of the past. Equally breathtaking day or night 🥰

Very pretty but I have to say, I was a bit annoyed there was a fee to cross the actual bridge. I understand the need to maintain a historical site and maybe I am not understanding the cultural background of the bridge. However you have a normal bridge to cross next to it and it allows you a very nice view. Would still recommend.
