Shiraho Beach

Shiraho Beach is located on the southeastern coast of Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, approximately 10 kilometers north of New Ishigaki Airport. The beach is named after the adjacent Shiraho village, a traditional Ryukyuan settlement that has maintained its cultural heritage and agricultural practices for centuries. The area gained international attention in the 1980s when local residents and environmental activists successfully opposed the construction of a new airport on the site, preserving what would become recognized as one of Japan's most ecologically significant coastal areas.

The beach's primary significance lies in the Shiraho Reef, the largest and oldest blue coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere. This reef system spans approximately 10 square kilometers and contains over 70 species of coral, including rare blue coral formations that are estimated to be several hundred years old. The reef supports exceptional marine biodiversity with more than 300 species of fish and various endangered species including sea turtles. In 2013, the reef was designated as part of the Sekisei Lagoon, a protected marine area under Japanese environmental law.

Visitors to Shiraho Beach experience a relatively undeveloped coastline with calm, shallow waters ideal for snorkeling and observing marine life. The beach features white sand mixed with coral fragments and offers clear visibility into the reef ecosystem during low tide. Glass-bottom boat tours operate from the beach, allowing observation of the coral formations without entering the water. The adjacent Shiraho Sango Village provides educational exhibits about coral reef conservation and the local environmental movement. Swimming and snorkeling are possible year-round, though the best conditions occur between April and October when water temperatures range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Access to Shiraho Beach requires rental car or taxi from Ishigaki city center, located approximately 20 minutes north. Public bus services operate with limited frequency on route 10 from Ishigaki Bus Terminal, though schedules may not align with tourism needs. The beach has basic facilities including a small parking area, but lacks commercial development such as restaurants or equipment rental shops. There is no admission fee to access the beach itself, though glass-bottom boat tours and organized snorkeling expeditions operate on a paid basis.
