Shiroyama Park

Shiroyama Park stands on the former site of Kagoshima Castle in southern Kyushu, offering panoramic views over Kagoshima city and the active volcano Sakurajima across Kinko Bay. The park occupies the hillside where the Shimazu clan, one of Japan's most powerful feudal families, maintained their castle headquarters for over 700 years until the Meiji Restoration. Though the original castle structures no longer exist, the park preserves the historical layout and stone foundations that once supported this significant seat of regional power.

The park gained additional historical importance as the site of Saigo Takamori's last stand during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. Saigo, one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history and a key figure in the Meiji Restoration, met his end here after leading a failed uprising against the modernizing government he had helped establish. A cave where Saigo spent his final days remains preserved within the park, and several monuments commemorate the battle and the fallen samurai.

Visitors can explore walking trails that wind through the hillside terrain, passing historical markers, stone monuments, and the cave site. The elevated position provides excellent vantage points for photographing Sakurajima, particularly striking during sunset or when the volcano shows activity. The park contains approximately 600 cherry trees, making it a popular hanami spot during spring bloom season in late March and early April. Several observation decks offer unobstructed views across the city and bay.

Shiroyama Park sits roughly 2 kilometers north of Kagoshima-Chuo Station. The City View Bus tourist loop stops at Shiroyama, providing convenient access from the station and other city attractions. Alternatively, a 15-20 minute walk from central Tenmonkan shopping district reaches the park entrance. Admission is free year-round. The hillside location requires some uphill walking on paved paths, though the main viewing areas remain accessible to most visitors.

Family friendly park with cherry blossoms 3/29. Even with bus you still gonna have to walk more than 30 mins and there’re not many buses. But I walked from JR station and it wasn’t too bad, a nice sushi restaurant and AEON Max value supermarket are on the way
