Soni Highlands

4.4 (1763)Tourist AttractionHiking AreaSports Activity LocationPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Soni Highlands are a mountainous region located in the Nara Prefecture of Japan, extending across the border into neighboring prefectures. This elevated plateau sits at an average altitude of 700 to 900 meters above sea level and has historically served as grazing land for cattle and horses since the Edo period. The distinctive landscape was shaped by centuries of controlled burning, a traditional practice called yamayaki that prevents forest encroachment and maintains the grasslands.

The highlands are renowned for their expansive susuki grass meadows that transform with the seasons, displaying vibrant green in summer and golden waves in autumn. This semi-natural grassland ecosystem supports diverse flora and fauna that have adapted to the open terrain. The region forms part of the Murō-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park, recognized for its ecological value and scenic beauty. Mount Kuroso, one of the prominent peaks, offers panoramic views across the plateau and surrounding mountain ranges.

Visitors can explore the highlands through several walking trails that traverse the grasslands and connect scenic viewpoints. The Soni Kogen Ranch provides opportunities to interact with grazing livestock and sample local dairy products. Popular activities include hiking, photography, and seasonal events such as the spring grass-burning ceremony where the entire plateau is set ablaze in a spectacular controlled burn. The autumn foliage season and the silver grass displays in late October draw significant numbers of visitors.

The highlands are accessible by car from Nabari City in approximately 50 minutes or from Nara City in roughly 90 minutes via Route 369 and prefectural roads. Public transportation involves taking a train to Nabari Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line, followed by a bus service to the highland area, though bus frequency is limited and primarily operates during peak seasons. No admission fee is charged to access the general highland areas, though specific facilities like the ranch may have separate charges for activities or products.

What other travelers are saying about Soni Highlands

Parking lot was charged at JPY800 there's public toilet and also a small mochi shop before heading up to the Highlands area. Can do a picnic (there are tables and benches) on the foot of the Kameyama or you can do a walk/hike up (easy level) and eat with an amazing view from the top of about 890+m). Doable for kids!

Memorable place to hike. We were huffing and puffing but an older lady wearing a dress and highheels passed us by. She looked so serene, we cant imagine how she climbed the rocky part of the climb. She was even holding a sun parasol

Such a beautiful hike! Especially in Autumn with all the pampas grass. The hike itself isn’t too intense, but it can get pretty rough on a really windy day so do come dressed warmly. There are picnic tables so you can bring your own food to enjoy at the site. Easily reachable by public transport from JR Nara station, but do note the bus is infrequent so plan ahead.

View from top is so amazing!! I love to watching clouds move at the top. But we can't stand so much time cuz of high temperature. Really few bus is running, it's like less than one hour per bus. If you gonna take bus, make sure of the time table. From the bus stop to the bottom of Soni hightlands is about 5km (around 1hour walk). I don't recommend with that way in this summer. The best way is car. Anyway, It's worth to go!

Frequently Asked Questions

The most popular seasons are spring (late March to early April) for the yamayaki grass-burning ceremony and autumn (late October to early November) when the susuki grass turns golden. Summer offers lush green meadows, while each season provides distinct landscapes and photographic opportunities.

Yes, though public transportation is limited. Take the Kintetsu Osaka Line to Nabari Station, then catch a bus to the highlands. Bus services run primarily during peak seasons and weekends, so checking the schedule in advance is essential. Renting a car provides much more flexibility for exploring the area.

The highlands feature several accessible walking trails with relatively gentle terrain across the plateau. The open grassland paths are well-maintained and suitable for casual walkers, though proper footwear is recommended. Trail difficulty varies, with some routes leading to higher peaks requiring moderate fitness levels.

The Soni Kogen Ranch area includes visitor facilities with restrooms, parking, and a shop selling local dairy products. Several restaurants and cafes operate in the region, particularly near main access points. Accommodation options are limited on the plateau itself, with most lodging available in nearby towns like Nabari.

The yamayaki is an annual tradition typically held in late March, though the exact date varies depending on weather conditions and safety considerations. The controlled burn covers large sections of the plateau and is a significant cultural event. Visitors should confirm the schedule closer to the date as it may be postponed or cancelled due to wind or dry conditions.
