Studio Kotonoha

5 (26)Point Of InterestEstablishment

Studio Kotonoha is a traditional Japanese calligraphy and cultural arts studio located in Kyoto's historic Higashiyama district. Established in 1987 by master calligrapher Tanaka Hiroshi, the studio occupies a restored 140-year-old machiya (traditional wooden townhouse) that once served as a residence for textile merchants during the late Edo period. The building features original tatami flooring, paper sliding doors, and a serene interior courtyard garden typical of Kyoto's merchant architecture.

The studio serves as both a working atelier and cultural center dedicated to preserving the ancient art of shodō (Japanese calligraphy). Visitors can observe master calligraphers creating works using traditional brushes, ink stones, and handmade paper. The studio houses a collection of over 200 historical calligraphy pieces dating from the Heian period to modern times, including works by renowned masters and examples of different calligraphic styles such as kaisho, gyōsho, and sōsho.

Studio Kotonoha offers hands-on calligraphy workshops lasting 90 minutes where participants learn basic brush techniques and create their own works under expert guidance. The experience includes instruction on proper posture, brush handling, and the philosophical principles underlying Japanese calligraphy. Advanced workshops focusing on specific scripts or seasonal poetry are available by appointment. The studio also hosts tea ceremony demonstrations twice daily, showcasing the connection between calligraphy and traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Seasonal programming enhances the cultural experience throughout the year. Spring sessions (March-May) feature cherry blossom-themed poetry and seasonal greeting cards. Summer workshops (June-August) focus on cooling imagery and traditional festival banners. Autumn classes (September-November) emphasize maple leaf motifs and harvest celebrations, while winter sessions (December-February) concentrate on New Year calligraphy and zodiac symbols.

Studio Kotonoha is located 5 minutes' walk from Kiyomizu-dera Temple and is accessible via Kyoto City Bus routes 100 and 206 to the Kiyomizu-michi stop. The nearest train station is Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo, approximately 10 minutes on foot. Workshop fees are ¥3,500 for basic sessions and ¥5,800 for advanced classes, including all materials and a traditional bento lunch. Advance booking is required through their website or by phone.
