Take the JR Chuo Line from central Tokyo, which takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The park has multiple entrance gates, with the main Tachikawa Gate being the most convenient for first-time visitors.
Yes, bicycle rentals are available at multiple park entrances. The cost is 600 yen for three hours or 800 yen for the entire day. The park features over 11 kilometers of dedicated cycling paths, making it an excellent way to explore the vast 165-hectare grounds efficiently.
The park is famous for its seasonal flower displays throughout the year, with spectacular ginkgo tree rows in autumn being a major highlight. Visitors can enjoy boating on the lakes, barbecue areas, children's playgrounds, sports facilities, and museums. The park also hosts winter illuminations and regular fireworks displays. Due to its enormous size, plan for a full day to explore everything properly.

I really wish I would have been able to see the cherry blossoms and other flowers blooming. I can not believe how big this place is right in the middle of the city. It was 60°F and beautiful sunny but here was almost no life and everything was brown and dead. I was just there at the wrong time of year, begining of March. Looks like a great place to bring the family or friends and enjoy a day out of the city life.
We had such a wonderful time at the Japanese Garden inside Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa. The whole place felt incredibly peaceful, with beautifully maintained landscapes, vibrant floral displays, and a lovely central pond surrounded by a relaxing strolling path.
What made our visit extra special was that it was cherry blossom season. Seeing the sakura in full bloom added so much color and charm—it honestly felt magical just walking around and taking it all in.
The atmosphere was calm, the scenery was stunning, and every corner seemed picture-perfect. If you’re planning to visit, I’d definitely recommend going right when it opens. It’s much quieter, and you can really enjoy the beauty of the garden without the crowds.
Surprisingly large, spectacular park.
Clean and so well-maintained.
One of the best spots around Tokyo to visit during springtime, especially if you want to see cherry blossoms, tulips, daffodils, and more. Will take you the whole day to cover the area by foot, but is indeed worth it. Visited the area earlier than usual, last week of March, most of the flowers are not yet in bloom, especially the tulips. Try visiting early to mid-April to enjoy the peak blooming season. Entrance is not free, adult tickets cost 450 yen each. Has different access points (Tachikawa, Nishi-Tachikawa, Akebono, Sunagawa, and Tamagawa Josui), with Nishi-Tachikawa and Tachikawa Gates being the most convenient and popular, around 2 mins and 20 mins walk, respectively, from nearest train station.
Very large, well maintained, and beautiful park in Tokyo. It is breathtaking in the spring and fall but can be enjoyed all year round. It was a wonderful Japanese garden with amazing bonsai - even one that is 400 years old. There also playgrounds, food stalls, and a train to take you around. Come, relax and enjoy.
Third time visiting Japan and my first solo trip so i wanted to check out some parks in Tokyo and Showa Kinen Park was a highly recommended park. It did not disappoint it really was a lovely place during the autumn season the colours of the leaves were a beautiful sight and the overall surrounding was wonderful especially the Japanese garden.
Autumn in Japan is truly an amazing time. I am looking forward to my next Japan visit in the new year.
