Magical place. If it seems hard to get to, you have been mislead by your GPS.
I visited the Jomon-Sugi in Yakushima which was also incredible, but this one (these two?) are equally impressive.
Sugi-no-Osugi refers to a pair of ancient Japanese cedar trees in Otoyo Town, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Known as Minami Osugi (South Giant Cedar) and Kita Osugi (North Giant Cedar), these trees are interconnected at the roots, forming what is locally known as "Meoto Sugi" or "Wedded Cedars."
The Sugi-no-Osugi trees are estimated to be over 3,000 years old. This remarkable age makes them some of the oldest trees in Japan, deeply rooted in local legends and history.
Minami Osugi stands approximately 60 meters tall, while Kita Osugi reaches about 57 meters. Their immense height and girth make them significant natural landmarks.
The trees are situated within the grounds of Yasaka Jinja in Otoyo Town, Kochi Prefecture, on Shikoku, Japan. The location is easily accessible by a 10-minute walk from JR Osugi Station or a short drive from Otoyo IC on the Kochi Expressway.
Visitors often come to Sugi-no-Osugi to make wishes, inspired by stories like that of Hibari Misora, a famous Japanese singer who prayed at the site as a child and achieved great success. The trees are also cherished for their cultural and historical significance, offering a serene spot for reflecting and appreciating nature.
