Sumida Aquarium is inside the Tokyo Skytree complex in Sumida City, Tokyo. It is on the 5th and 6th floors of Tokyo Solamachi, a popular shopping and entertainment area near Oshiage Station.
Most visitors spend about 1 to 1.5 hours at the aquarium, though those who enjoy watching marine animals closely may stay longer. Its compact size makes it easy to explore without feeling rushed.

It was a nice experience to visit this aquarium. I particularly loved the variety of Jellyfish 🪼 in this aquarium. Maybe, some of the fishes had a little crunched space but overall the display was good. one can cover it when you visit the Skytree as it is next to each other. 1 hour is sufficient to explore the aquarium.
We visited Sumida Aquarium and it turned out to be one of those rare, unforgettable experiences.
It’s not a huge aquarium, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It feels boutique, carefully designed, and incredibly immersive. Every section has been thoughtfully curated rather than overwhelming you with size.
The jellyfish area is absolutely mesmerizing — almost like a living art installation. Watching them slowly float in perfectly lit tanks is surprisingly calming and unique. The jellyfish lab concept also adds a more educational and interesting layer to the visit.
The penguin zone was another highlight. Seeing them so up close, especially for kids, makes the experience even more memorable.
What really stood out is how family-friendly this place is. It’s easy to navigate, not exhausting, and keeps both adults and children engaged the whole time. It’s one of those rare places where quality clearly matters more than quantity.
If you’re in Tokyo and looking for something different from the typical crowded attractions, this is a hidden gem. Small, elegant, and truly special — highly recommended, especially for families.
This is one of my favorite aquariums. You are allowed to bring outside food and drinks. There is a also a lot of seating in front of the penguins. The relationship chart is also amusing. If you like stamps, I think they switch it out every month. I only noticed recently since I have the annual passport which is so worth it especially if you visit Skytree often. Also, the bathroom was very nice. It's kind of hidden, but surprisingly clean and spacious. You can easily chill at the aquarium for hours or work since they have seating. Also if you want to leave for lunch or whatever, you can stamp your hand, and come back the same day. The gift shop was so cute. I couldn't resist buying a baby penguin plushie. I also got a discount since I have the annual passport.
It’s a fun attraction at the Tokyo Skytree for all ages, though a bit expensive for its size. Lots of jellyfish, garden eels, and reef aquariums; there’s one tank that’s just massive and full of coexisting fish, sharks, and manta rays. They’ve added several informational signs in multiple languages. Their koi fish exhibit walks through selective breeding for traits and how we’ve evolved certain breeds of koi.
The seal enclosure seems much too small and confining for the size and number of seals they have. They just kept swimming in the name neurotic circles. It was actually quite depressing to see, and for that alone, I wouldn’t recommend visiting.
The penguin enclosure is much more expansive and they have a ton of penguins. They also have them color-coded and there’s a big chart where they keep track of all the relationships and families within the colony, it’s pretty cute.
It’s one of the best aquariums I’ve been to and also the smallest. It’s really just about two floors, but everything inside is incredibly thoughtful. The design, the music, and especially the spotless glass (which must be cleaned daily, if not twice a day!) make the experience feel premium.
The penguins are super cute, and there are tons of them!
Overall, if you’re looking to see a wide variety of sea animals, this isn’t the place. But it’s perfect for a two-hour visit and makes for a really cute date spot.
