Sumoto Castle Ruins, Hyogo

Sumoto Castle stands on Mount Mikuma at 133 meters above sea level on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. Originally constructed in 1526 by Atagi Haruoki, a leader of the Kumano Suigun naval forces, this strategic fortress controlled maritime traffic through the Kitan Strait at the southern entrance to Osaka Bay. The castle served as the political center of Awaji Province from the Warring States Period through the Edo Period, passing through the hands of several prominent feudal lords including Sengoku Hidehisa, Wakizaka Yasuharu, and the Inada clan, who governed until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

The ruins showcase some of western Japan's most impressive stone fortifications, with walls measuring 800 meters east to west and 600 meters north to south. These authentic stone foundations represent one of the largest fortress complexes in the region and demonstrate rare examples of climbing stone wall construction. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1999 and selected as one of the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles in 2017. A small concrete reconstruction of the main keep, built in 1928, serves as an observation tower and represents one of Japan's oldest reconstructed castle towers.

Visitors experience panoramic views of Sumoto City, Osaka Bay, the Kitan Strait, and Awaji Island's mountainous interior from the summit. The climbing path follows the original warrior route through successive gates and stone stairways, with moss-covered walls creating atmospheric scenes throughout the seasons. Cherry trees line the upper paths, making spring visits particularly spectacular during sakura blooming season. The ruins offer excellent vantage points for photography, especially at sunset when the illuminated cityscape below creates dramatic contrasts.

The castle grounds are accessible by a 15-20 minute hiking trail from the base or a 5-minute walk from the parking area near the summit. Admission is free with parking available for 115 vehicles across two locations. The site operates an electric bicycle rental scheme for exploring the broader area. Express buses run from Kobe to Sumoto City, while ferries from Akashi provide alternative access to northern Awaji Island.
