What other travelers are saying about Takao 599 Museum
I was absolutely horrified with this museum. The curators should re-think the exhibits.
The museum is full of DEAD taxidermied or preserved specimens--animals, plants, and fungi. The three or four living animals are in sad, plastic aquariums completely devoid of any enrichment. Just water and maybe a rock or two. I hope the animals weren't killed specifically for this exhibit.
The area is so incredibly beautiful. It would be such a better experience if visitors would be educated on they types of habitat they will encounter, and were organisms would be found within. The live specimens should be released or at least kept in better conditions. They're sentient beings, not objects.
Yes, TAKAO 599 MUSEUM offers free admission to all visitors. The museum provides complimentary access to its exhibitions, Nature Wall projection mapping displays, and outdoor lawn area. However, there is a usage fee if you wish to rent the museum's public gallery space for events or activities.
From April to November, the museum opens from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with last admission at 4:30 PM. From December to March, hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM with last admission at 3:30 PM. The museum is open year-round, though it may close temporarily for maintenance.
The museum does not have guest parking facilities, with only one space available for disabled parking permit holders. Visitors arriving by car should use nearby paid parking lots, such as the Hachioji City Mount Takao Sightseeing Parking Lot. The museum recommends that visitors take public transportation whenever possible.
The projection mapping shows at the Nature Wall run approximately seven minutes. These displays are performed every hour and feature dynamic imagery and music that illustrate Mount Takao's seasonal scenery. The show combines taxidermied animals with projection mapping to create an immersive experience of the mountain's forest environment throughout different seasons.
Food and drinks are only allowed in designated areas within the museum. Visitors should refrain from taking candies or gum into the facility, and hosting parties is prohibited. The museum has an on-site café where visitors can purchase refreshments, featuring tables and chairs made from Tama region wood with views of the outdoor lawn area. Wi-Fi is also available at the café.
I really enjoyed this small, free, very modern looking museum.
Displays of the different types of animals that can be found on Mount Takao. Cases filled with different insects. A short video presentation on the hour.
One small stamp at the entryway.
A beautiful museum which has been curated carefully. The displays are gorgeous. It is a great spot to rest in busy Takao area. There is also a small shop with very cool gifts- the funds also contribute to the museum!
