The Takashimizu Trail opened in November 2019 as an 8,132-meter trekking course that traverses the prefectural border between Kagamino Town in Okayama Prefecture and Misasa Town in Tottori Prefecture. The trail follows the ridge along this border, starting and ending at Ningyo Pass at 735 meters above sea level, and continuing to Takashimizu Plateau at 950 meters and Mount Hakushu at 1,044 meters. The trail represents a modern addition to the Chugoku Mountains trekking network, designed to showcase the natural beauty of this mountainous region where Okayama meets Tottori.

The course is paved with wood chips, making it gentle on the feet and hips and accessible even for beginners. The trail provides a comfortable trekking experience with temperatures that rarely exceed 30 degrees Celsius even in midsummer. Hikers can encounter primeval beech forests along the route and observe Iwauchiwa, a wildflower with pale pink-purple blooms. The trail offers opportunities to experience the four seasons of the Chugoku Mountains, with varying natural attractions throughout the year.

Visitors can adjust their trek according to time and physical ability along the well-maintained ridge path. The view from the top of Mount Takashimizu at 950 meters elevation is particularly noteworthy. During winter, the trail receives nearly 2 meters of snow, making it inaccessible without special equipment such as snowshoes. The trail provides a health-focused outdoor experience through the pristine mountain environment.

Access to the Takashimizu Trail begins at Ningyo Pass in Kagamino Town. For tourism information and inquiries, contact the Kagamino Tourism Bureau at 0868-52-9100. The trail is free to access, with no admission fees required for hiking. Visitors should plan according to seasonal conditions, particularly in winter when specialized equipment becomes necessary for safe passage.

Traveler reviews

We started the climb from the parking lot next to the Ningyo Pass Atom Science Museum. The hiking trail was well maintained and there were few slopes, making it an easy climb. There was also a rest area at Takashimizu Plateau, where we were able to sit and relax and eat our meal. It was a sunny day, and we were able to enjoy a panoramic view of Mt. Daisen and Hiruzen, which was lovely. The parking lot and rest area are well-maintained, and the climb is easy, so I think it's a mountain that's perfect for families. There are also games for children at the Atom Science Museum, so it would be fun to stop by and play on your way back.

I only hiked up to Takashimizu Plateau, but it took about an hour and a half round trip, including breaks. It might be beginner-level mountain climbing, but if you're just looking for a walk, it's incredibly tough. It was quite a steep climb... But the view from the top of the plateau is so refreshing, and it's definitely worth a visit.

I did a traverse. I left my bicycle at the Akawase parking lot, drove back to the trailhead at Ningyo-toge Pass, and started climbing from the Ningyo-toge Pass side. The weather was great, and I was very satisfied to be able to walk through the fresh greenery. The climb wasn't too difficult, and I think it would be easy even for beginners. The toilets at the Akawase parking lot were very clean, and even I, who dislikes insects, was able to use them comfortably. I cycled back from the Akawase parking lot towards Ningyo-toge Pass, but it was quite tiring because there were uphill sections. I think most people who do the traverse return the way they came without descending.

I took my first hike here during a break in the rainy season. The trail is generally easy to walk. I'm not a regular hiker, but this time I hiked to Hakushu-yama and back. It took longer than I expected, about 5 hours. Since it's a ridge walk at an altitude of 1000 meters, be sure to pay close attention to the weather forecast. In mid-summer, there's less shade, so be careful of heatstroke. I love walking through the beech forest along the way, and the views are fantastic, stretching all the way to the Sea of Japan and Mt. Daisen. There are still many deciduous trees in this area, so I'd love to come back in the autumn.

Since the round trip would take over 5 hours, completing the entire route might be difficult. If you turn back halfway, you can enjoy a pleasant and relaxed walk.
