Asahi River Sakura Road

Asahi River Sakura Road stretches approximately 1 kilometer along the east bank of the Asahi River in Okayama City, creating one of the city's most beloved cherry blossom viewing spots. The tree-lined path runs from Horai Bridge to Aioi Bridge and features about 250 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, which transform the riverside into a tunnel of pink blossoms each spring. The location lies on the east side of Okayama Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three most famous gardens, making it a natural extension of the city's historic landscape.

The annual Okayama Sakura Carnival has been held here since 1986 and attracts approximately 70,000 visitors each year. The festival typically runs from late March to early April, coinciding with peak bloom season. During this period, the riverside transforms into a festive gathering place where visitors enjoy traditional hanami picnics beneath the flowering trees. Food stalls line the 400-meter carnival venue, offering local specialties such as Chiya beef ramen and Hinase oysters alongside festival favorites.

The experience extends beyond daylight viewing. From sunset until 9 PM, the cherry trees are illuminated with floodlights and paper lanterns, creating atmospheric nighttime views that reflect on the river's surface. Visitors can photograph the blossoms against the backdrop of nearby Okayama Castle, which rises prominently in the distance. Take the Okayama Korakuen bus from JR Okayama Station for approximately 10 minutes and disembark at Korakuen-mae. The site is a short walk from the bus stop. There is no admission fee to view the cherry blossoms along the public riverside path, though visitors should note that no dedicated parking is available and public transportation is recommended. The location's proximity to Okayama Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle allows visitors to easily combine multiple attractions in a single visit during cherry blossom season.
