Takenohama Beach, Toyooka

Takenohama Beach, also known as Takeno Beach, is located in Hyogo Prefecture near Toyooka City along Japan's Sea of Japan coast. This area was historically part of the Izushi Domain and was once known for salt production. Visitors can still explore a Salt Workshop where ancient salt-making techniques are demonstrated. The beach sits on a narrow strip of land formation called a tombolo, creating its distinctive geographical character.

The beach is officially recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Beaches and attracts over 300,000 visitors annually due to its exceptional natural beauty. The pristine white sand beach extends for approximately one kilometer and offers some of the clearest waters in the country. Swimming is permitted from early July through August when the beach is officially open to the public. The beach forms part of the San'in Coast Geopark, providing outstanding coastal scenery and diverse marine ecosystems.

Key visitor experiences include swimming in the crystal-clear waters, sea kayaking, and participating in geo canoe tours that explore the unique rock formations and sea caves along the coast. The famous Hasakari Rock formation, where a large boulder appears wedged between two cliffs, provides a notable landmark. The nearby Nekozaki Peninsula offers panoramic views and is said to resemble a "KEWPIE" doll lying on its back. The location provides spectacular sunrise and sunset views over the Sea of Japan throughout the year.

The beach is accessible via JR Takeno Station, requiring a 15-25 minute walk from the station to the beach. From Shin-Osaka Station, travelers take an express train to Toyooka Station (approximately 3 hours), then transfer to a local train to Takeno Station (about 20 minutes). The total journey from Kyoto or Osaka takes 3-4 hours by train. Alternatively, the Hamakaze Express provides direct service from Sannomiya Station in Kobe, taking approximately 2.5 hours. Bicycle rentals are available from the tourist information counter at Takeno Station for convenient beach access. By car from Kobe, the journey takes about 2.5 hours. Beach access is free of charge, though specific activity fees may apply for guided tours and equipment rentals.
