Tamatorizaki Observatory sits on a small hill in the northeastern part of Ishigaki Island, part of Okinawa Prefecture's Yaeyama Islands chain, approximately 27 km from New Ishigaki Airport. The site has long served as one of the island's most recognized natural vantage points, positioned at the narrowest section of Ishigaki Island where the views span both the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean simultaneously — a geographic rarity that has made it a landmark in local island culture and tourism.

The observatory's natural significance lies in its position within the broader Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, a protected landscape renowned for its coral reefs and subtropical biodiversity. From the viewing platform, the panorama stretches from the Hirakubo Peninsula to the north — known locally as the "tail of the Shisa" — to Mount Hanna (Hannandake), which rises 239 metres above sea level, and south as far as Noburo Point, with the coral-filled waters of Ibaruma Bay lining the coastline below.

Visitors follow a short paved walkway from the car park to the deck — a walk of roughly 3 to 5 minutes — lined with year-round tropical blooms including hibiscus and Okinawan windmill hibiscus, alongside Adan (pandanus) trees bearing pineapple-like fruit. The observatory faces east and is well known for its sunrises.

A full visit requires no more than 20 to 30 minutes, making it a natural stop on a northern island loop that often includes Cape Hirakubozaki Lighthouse at the island's northernmost tip. Several restaurants and cafes sit near the observatory, serving dishes featuring local ingredients such as Ishigaki beef.

By car, the site is approximately 25 minutes from New Ishigaki Airport and 55 minutes from Ishigaki City centre, with free parking available for around 25 cars on the mountain-side lot. By public bus, the Hirano Line (east round-trip route) stops at the Tamatorizaki bus stop, a 3-minute walk from the observatory; however, only 4 buses per day operate on this route, so checking the schedule in advance is essential.

What other travelers are saying about Tamatorizaki Observatory, Ishigaki

Preguntas frecuentes

Entry and parking are both free of charge. The main lot fits 25 small cars and 5 large buses; a secondary lot holds 10 small cars and 1 large bus.

Around 20 to 30 minutes in total. The walk from the car park to the viewing platform is 3 to 5 minutes on a paved path.

Early morning is best for sunrises, as the platform faces east over the Pacific Ocean. Midday offers the clearest visibility for views of Ibaruma Bay and the Hirakubo Peninsula. Weekday mornings are generally the quietest.

No. The site's value is entirely the panoramic view across Ibaruma Bay, the Hirakubo Peninsula, and Mount Hanna. Cloud or rain significantly reduces visibility.

Yes. The path from the car park to the viewing platform is fully paved and accessible for both wheelchairs and strollers.
