Tanzan Shrine

4.3 (200)Tourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Tanzan Shrine, nestled in the picturesque mountains of Nara, is not just a shrine but a historical monument that beautifully encapsulates Japan's rich cultural tapestry. Originally built as a temple in the 7th century, Tanzan Shrine is most famous for its unique 13-story pagoda, a rarity in Japan, which stands as a stunning example of ancient Japanese architecture.

Tanzan shrine holds significant historical importance due to its association with the 12th-century political event, the Taika Reforms, which fundamentally changed Japanese governance. Each autumn, Tanzan Shrine becomes the focal point of a vibrant festival that celebrates these reforms, drawing visitors from across Japan and around the world.

Surrounded by thousands of cherry trees, Tanzan Shrine is particularly breathtaking in spring when the blossoms are in full bloom. The combination of its architectural uniqueness, historical significance, and natural beauty makes Tanzan Shrine a compelling destination for those looking to delve deeper into Japan’s past and enjoy its present beauty.

What other travelers are saying about Tanzan Shrine

Amazing Shrine built on the hill. It required considerable amount of walking from the carpark with steep steps. The 13-storey pagoda was the only one in existence in Japan. With fall colours as the set off, the scenery was breathtaking. It's worth all the effort made.

I liked our visit at Tanzan Jinjia. It is a very quiet place surrounded by nature and located on the side of a small hill. The ascent to the top is very peaceful and from there you will have a nice view. To get to the top the train in the forest is also a picturesque one. When we were there not many people were visiting which made it a better experience. Close to the entrance there is a parking spot if you are coming with a car but we used the one located next to the convenience store which was free and empty considering that there were not many people around.

Absolute fun on an Autumn day. Now is the time. Leaves reaching peak. Interesting 500 year old temple converted into a massive shrine especially for those seeking love. Great little udon place reasonable just to the right of the main entrance. Parking near ¥1000 in November but free lots nearby with a little walk. Don't turn sharp left to the shrine direct but continue down the road above to free lots. Just a lovely day trip. Area has other shrines, temples, and museums in stunning scenery. Even the Lawsons are in old style buildings.

Stunning autumn colors in full bloom !! Lots of vendors selling snacks and local products on the way to the Jinja. Parking was quite easy probably because we visited on a Monday.
