Tateyama Onsen Senri no Kaze

4.1 (1176)HotelLodgingPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Tateyama Onsen Senri no Kaze stands as a modern hot spring resort hotel nestled within the natural beauty of Minamiboso Quasi-National Park on the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. This contemporary ryokan represents a new generation of onsen facilities that blend traditional Japanese hospitality with modern amenities, offering guests panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from elevated coastal bluffs.

The resort's significance lies in its strategic position within one of Japan's most accessible coastal retreat areas, just 90 minutes from Tokyo. The facility capitalizes on natural hot spring waters while providing guests with unobstructed ocean vistas that have made this section of the Boso Peninsula a favored destination for urban residents seeking coastal tranquility. The name "Senri no Kaze" translates to "Wind of a Thousand Miles," reflecting the sweeping ocean views and coastal breezes that define the location.

Visitors experience the resort's signature open-air baths with direct Pacific Ocean views, allowing for sunrise soaking sessions that have become the property's most celebrated feature. The facility offers both private bath options and communal hot spring facilities, complemented by kaiseki dining featuring locally sourced ingredients from the peninsula's farms and coastal waters. Additional amenities include a seasonal outdoor pool, terrace areas for ocean viewing, and traditional ryokan accommodations that maintain authentic Japanese design elements while incorporating modern comfort features.

The resort provides complimentary shuttle service for transportation within the local area and offers free private parking for guests arriving by vehicle. Access from Tokyo involves taking JR express trains to Tateyama Station (approximately 1 hour 50 minutes), followed by local bus connections, or alternatively, direct highway buses from Tokyo Station requiring 2 hours travel time at 2,500-2,800 yen one way. The property is located 1.2 kilometers from Tateyama Forest of Wild Birds and 1.3 kilometers from Awa Shrine, positioning guests within walking distance of the area's primary cultural and natural attractions. Current rates begin around $220 per night, with the facility maintaining a 4 out of 5 rating among international visitors based on its combination of scenic location, onsen quality, and traditional service standards.

They wouldn't let me check in when it was late at night and I was freezing cold. I had to sleep in a chair in their lobby. At least they let me sleep in a chair in the lobby, other hotels wouldn't let me in to get warm. I was about to call 119 because I was getting so cold outside and no one would give me shelter (I had a bicycle, not a car). Then I asked to please be allowed to get hot water from the drink bar and would pay any price, they refused. Give me a break, have some compassion. I asked if I could just get an onsen since they wouldn't let me get a room until 11am (I slept in the lobby chair from 2am-7am). Nope. So I just left. I would have gladly paid and was desperate to pay for room, onsen, food, and was refused all three because it wasn't 11am. Stupid.

The sashimi and other seafood was excellent. At dinner, we had grouper sashimi and hot pot, and the sushi ingredients were also of high quality. Breakfast also featured freshly filleted flounder and red sea bream sashimi (there was also yellowtail and tuna), and the pickled flounder flounder and amberjack were a luxurious and satisfying selection. There was a wide variety of other dishes, and they were all generally delicious. The room was also well-cleaned, allowing us to relax. As it was a holiday, it wasn't cheap at around 45,000 yen per person, but it was a great trip.

I used the hot springs for a day trip. The hotel was clean and had amenities provided, so I was able to use the baths comfortably. Day trips are allowed until 3:00 p.m., but cars started arriving one after another after 3:00 p.m. It seems like the hotel is also popular for overnight stays. I'd like to stay overnight next time.

I was on a one-day bus tour organized by the local community, and we had a set lunch and a bath. Many of the staff were foreigners. The warm water was just right, with a view of the ocean. Unfortunately, we couldn't go out to the open-air bath due to the strong wind. We could see Mt. Fuji.
