This museum completely amazed me. The artist’s imagination is incredible — I had never seen or experienced an exhibition quite like this before. The creativity and originality of the installations make it feel truly unique.
The water section in particular was absolutely wow. Walking through it felt magical and immersive in a way that’s hard to describe. It honestly made me feel like a kid again, just exploring and being amazed by everything around me.
Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the city. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you long after you leave.
Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting wet, as some installations involve walking through knee-deep water. Skirts and dresses shorter than knee-length are not recommended. You'll need to remove your shoes and socks, so choose footwear that's easy to take off. Shorts or pants that can be rolled up work best.
Most visitors spend between 60 to 90 minutes exploring all the installations and gardens. However, you can move at your own pace, and there's no strict time limit once you enter. Some people prefer to spend longer photographing and experiencing each space multiple times.
Food and drinks are not permitted inside the exhibition spaces. However, the museum has a vegan ramen restaurant on-site where you can dine before or after your visit. Water fountains are available in rest areas outside the exhibition zones.
Yes, free coin-return lockers are provided for storing shoes, bags, and other belongings. Since you walk barefoot through water, you'll need to store everything except your phone or small camera. Waterproof phone cases are available for purchase if you want to protect your device.
Have to be honest, Planets wasn't my favourite. I think it's a little unfair as I am definitely comparing it to our experience at Borderless which we went to last year, but for me I enjoyed this one less.
The good - super interactive exhibits. Much more tactile, some things require a bit of athleticism and coordination to do, some don't require it as much. Definitely some creativity with some of the exhibits. I like that the staff are clear that you can't film yourself and take photos while doing the more interactive exhibits, so that people keep moving along. Staff here were fantastic, all of them were very helpful at directing us where to go when we asked questions.
The not so great in my opinion - I find the water side of things to be gimmicky. 3/4 of the exhibits in the water area really don't require you to be barefoot at all, and you just get cold. For example, one of the exhibits in the water area is exactly the same as an exhibit at Borderless, the only difference is you're barefeet on cold glass. I think one of the water exhibits was really cool, otherwise the water exhibits was only ok to me.
I definitely recommend getting tickets for the very first timeslot, as it got busier as the morning went along. It took us about 2 hours to get through everything. We tried all the interactive exhibits at least once.
All in all I think it's a good experience. I suppose I just wasn't "wow'd"
I’m an experience design nerd and my boyfriend loves an activity, so I was excited to finally get back to Tokyo and visit a teamLab.
However, this ended up being the most disappointing part of our trip.
The exhibition was so busy that it made it totally unenjoyable. Everyone was being shuffled from room to room, and it felt far too crowded to really enjoy. We left without experiencing some of the spaces as it was just too crowded.
Yes, the ideas and rooms are fun. The moss garden is beautiful. And it’s really cool to see adults getting so into the various activities, and says a lot about people’s desire to play and create (the drawing section was super busy) and how they just need a nudge (and to buy a ticket!) to do so.
I wish the tickets had been twice as expensive and they only admitted half as many guests in each session. And/or there was more design effort to make the queues and crowdedness actually enjoyable, in the way that Disney make the queues part of the rides.
Overall, I wouldn’t recommend the experience for other people travelling. But if you do brave it, I can recommend going to lie in Yoyogi Park afterwards to recover!
A truly surreal experience. We traversed thru massive art installations themed around water, forest, and more. It felt like walking through an alien landscape. The designs of the exhibits were all so creative and inspiring, and I recommend taking a couple minutes to read the plaque outside each one so you can understand the artist's message. There's even one room entirely designed for kids - perfect for families. There was a bit of a wait outside, even though you're booking a ticket for a specific time slot, but the line moves quickly. Overall, the experience was so worth it. I could get lost in here for a couple hours and have a great time.
A fun and awe-inspiring experience for both kids and adults! We enjoyed every part of the exhibition, including the water area. There are tons of corners perfect for photos and plenty of interactive installations that really let you immerse yourself in the art. The whole experience engages all your senses, making it feel far more than a typical “museum.”
It was a bit dark inside and quite crowded when we visited (we went on a Friday), so walking around could be slightly challenging. But with a little patience, everything was still enjoyable. The staff were incredibly kind and well-trained too.
Every room was amazing, and participating in the installations really enhanced the experience. I also appreciated the lockers and the towels provided after getting wet. We had so much fun that we ended up staying until closing time. The kids loved the more active rooms, and for me, every space had great photo opportunities. The ushers also guided us on which areas to visit first so we could make the most of our time.
Booking tickets online is easy, and you can choose your preferred time slot. I recommend arriving around an hour before your scheduled entry because the queue starts early. The ticket price is a bit high (just over 5,000 yen), but it was absolutely worth it. This was one of my must-visit spots in Tokyo, and it truly lived up to expectations. Highly recommended!
