Tedori Gorge

Tedori Gorge is a dramatic river valley located in Ishikawa Prefecture on Japan's western coast, carved over millennia by the Tedori River as it flows from the Hakusan mountain range toward the Sea of Japan. The gorge stretches approximately 8 kilometers through steep mountain terrain, with towering rock walls rising up to 500 meters in places. The area takes its name from the Tedori River, which has been central to the region's agricultural development for centuries, providing irrigation water to the fertile Kaga Plain below.

The gorge holds both geological and cultural significance as part of the Hakusan National Park, one of Japan's most important protected natural areas. The journey covers approximately 2.4 kilometers and takes around 15 minutes, with experienced boatmen navigating the sometimes turbulent waters while providing commentary on the geological features. Several observation points along the gorge rim offer panoramic views, and walking trails wind through the surrounding forest, particularly beautiful during autumn when the foliage transforms into vibrant reds and golds.

Access to Tedori Gorge requires traveling to Ishikawa Prefecture's Nomi or Hakusan areas. The most convenient approach is by private vehicle, as public transportation to the gorge itself is limited. From Kanazawa, the prefectural capital located about 40 kilometers north, the drive takes approximately one hour via Route 157. Those relying on public transport can take a bus from Kanazawa to Shiramine or nearby towns, followed by a taxi to reach the gorge entrance points.
