What other travelers are saying about Teramachi and Shinkyogoku Shopping Arcades
We visited this shopping street and found there is a nice variety of shops selling snacks, apparel, souvenirs and food. Most of it is covered although there are more shops to the side of the street. It was interesting to walk here, browse the shops and have some snacks.
Teramachi Shopping Street in Kyoto is a lively and historic shopping arcade known for its mix of traditional and modern shops. It’s a great place to explore local crafts, antiques, fashion, and specialty stores selling everything from calligraphy brushes to anime merchandise. There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shrines hidden among the shops, giving the area a unique cultural charm.
Pros:
✔️ Wide variety of shops, from traditional Kyoto goods to modern fashion and pop culture
✔️ Covered arcade, making it a great spot for shopping in any weather
✔️ Close to other attractions like Nishiki Market and Shinkyogoku Shopping Street
Cons:
1) Can get crowded, especially on weekends
2) Prices can be a bit high for tourist-oriented shops
Overall, Teramachi is a must-visit for anyone wanting a blend of old and new Kyoto in one shopping experience.
Endless shopping streets right next to Nishiki market. A lot less touristy than Nishiki and really worth allocating time here to check out the many interesting shops. Love the clams ramen at the end of one of the streets.
I found lots of great shopping here from souvenirs to secondhand clothes to stationary shop. The secondhand clothes are fashionable and high-quality. It’s also a great place to just find a coffee shop and people watch for a little while. There is a lot of great street food in the area. I found a lot of what I was looking for for gifts as well as for myself in this area.
I like how a lot of the shopping streets in Japan are covered for the convenience of the shoppers. This street is near to the more popular Nishiki Market but it is a nice change from Nishiki as the alley is wider, brighter and less crowded. There is a nice variety of shops here from clothing stores to fast foods. Shinkyogoku is another shopping arcade which runs parallel to Teramachi street.
