Tokamachi City Museum
Tokamachi City Museum is located in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, in the Echigo-Tsumari region known for heavy snowfall. The museum documents the region's history from prehistoric times through its textile production heritage, particularly Echigo-chijimi and Echigo-jofu ramie fabrics from the Edo period. The facility chronicles how communities adapted to the snow country environment through unique architectural, agricultural, and social practices.
The museum preserves textile traditions that shaped regional economy. Echigo-jofu is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. The museum displays historical textiles, weaving equipment, and production techniques. The facility includes Jomon period archaeology with pottery and artifacts from ancient settlements. The museum covers the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, an international art festival established in 2000.

Access from Tokamachi Station on the JR Iiyama Line and Hokuhoku Line, approximately 10 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi. From Tokyo, take Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (about 1.5 hours), transfer to Hokuhoku Line (roughly 25 minutes). From Niigata City, take JR Iiyama Line to Tokamachi (approximately 1.5 hours). By car, exit Kanetsu Expressway at Shiozawa-Ishiuchi Interchange, drive approximately 30 minutes. Admission 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for children.
