Tokuyama Port

3.2 (44)Ferry TerminalTransit StationTransportation ServicePoint Of InterestEstablishment

Tokuyama Port is located in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the southern coast of Japan's Honshu island. This industrial port has served as a vital maritime gateway since the early 20th century, developing rapidly after 1935 when major petrochemical and industrial facilities were established in the area. The port transformed the region into one of Japan's key industrial zones, particularly for chemical manufacturing and oil refining.

The port area spans approximately 1,200 hectares and handles both commercial cargo and passenger vessels. While primarily an industrial facility, the waterfront has been partially redeveloped to include public spaces where visitors can observe large-scale maritime operations and gain insight into Japan's industrial heritage. The Tokuyama Bridge, visible from various points along the port, connects the mainland to artificial islands and serves as a notable engineering landmark.

Visitors can explore the waterfront promenade areas that offer views of cargo operations, industrial facilities, and the Seto Inland Sea. The port occasionally hosts events and exhibitions related to maritime industry and local history. The nearby Shunan City Museum of Art and History provides context about the region's transformation from a small fishing community to an industrial center. Photography enthusiasts are drawn to the industrial landscape, particularly during evening hours when facilities are illuminated.

Tokuyama Port is accessible via JR Tokuyama Station, located approximately 3 kilometers from the main port area. Local buses run regularly between the station and waterfront, with journey times of around 15 minutes. The port area itself is free to access for public waterfront sections, though industrial zones are restricted. No admission fees apply for general observation areas. Visitors should note that this is primarily a working port with active industrial operations, so access is limited to designated public spaces.

What other travelers are saying about Tokuyama Port

I took the Kokai II bound for Otsushima. The staff were very kind and the boat trip was pleasant. One thing, as others have mentioned, The "Otsushima-bound parking lot (with a waiting area nearby)" and the "actual boat dock" are completely different. (When I took my trip, it was on the other side of the building where you buy tickets.) When the time approached and the boat still wasn't docked, I asked again at the ticket counter and found out it was a different dock. I was glad I made it just in time, but I wish they'd put up a sign indicating the boat dock near the ticket machine. (There is a sign, but it wasn't on the path from inside the building to the ticket machine, so I didn't notice it.)

I used this ferry when heading to the former Kaiten training base on Umashima Island on Otsushima Island. It's less than a 10-minute walk from Tokuyama Station. Tickets are sold inside the Tokuyama Port Building. There are two types of ferries operating, one to Otsushima and one to Oita, and they are operated by different companies and have different tickets. Facilities such as toilets and a waiting area are available.

It's a three-minute walk from Tokuyama Station along a straight road. Two companies operate the ferry: Otsushima Cruise, which heads to Otsushima, where the Kaiten Memorial Museum is located, and Suonada Ferry, which heads to Oita Prefecture in Kyushu. There are three departure and arrival points: Suonada is directly in front of the pier jutting out into the sea, and Otsushima Cruise is located on the two right and left sides. Otsushima Cruise is served by the regular cruise ship Kokai II (44 minutes to Umashima) and the high-speed ferry Shin-Otsushima Ferry (18 minutes), and they depart and arrive at different points, so be careful. Signs at Tokuyama Station and the port, as well as a notice on the company's website (dated August 21, 2018), state that the high-speed ferry is on the right and the cruise ship is on the left, but in reality, the departure and arrival points are reversed. If you're using Otsushima Cruise for the first time, it's a good idea to confirm the boarding points with staff at the ticket office or other locations. 2019/1/22.Tue

The ferry terminal is uniquely located within walking distance of the Shinkansen station. Ferries depart for Oita and Otsushima.

There's a free parking lot next to the boat dock, which I used. (^ω^) A one-way ticket to Umajima, bound for the Kaiten Memorial Museum, costs ¥710 for adults. You can purchase a round-trip ticket at the ticket counter. (^^) Once you've purchased your ticket, you can board the boat right away. There are unreserved seats.♫ There are also accessible seats. (◠‿◠) On nice days, the seats on the second floor are comfortable.☆ A crew member will come and collect your ticket while you're on board.♫ Thank you for the wonderful boat trip.♡♡
