Tottori Toshogu is a Shinto shrine located in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Established in 1650 by the Ikeda clan, who ruled the Tottori domain, the shrine is one of several Toshogu shrines built across Japan to honor Ieyasu following his deification. While less famous than its counterpart in Nikko, Tottori Toshogu represents an important example of early Edo period shrine architecture and the widespread veneration of Ieyasu throughout feudal Japan.

The shrine's cultural significance lies in its well-preserved architectural features and its connection to the Ikeda family, who maintained close ties with the Tokugawa shogunate. The main hall and worship hall showcase intricate woodwork and decorative elements typical of Toshogu shrines, though on a more modest scale compared to the lavish designs found at Nikko Toshogu. The shrine grounds include traditional stone lanterns, torii gates, and mature trees that create a serene atmosphere characteristic of Japanese sacred spaces.

Visitors to Tottori Toshogu can explore the shrine's buildings and grounds while learning about the historical relationship between the local domain and the shogunate. The shrine hosts traditional festivals and ceremonies throughout the year, with the annual spring festival being particularly notable. The tranquil setting provides a peaceful retreat from the city center and offers insight into regional history and Shinto traditions. Photography is generally permitted in the outer areas of the shrine.

Tottori Toshogu is located approximately 2 kilometers northeast of JR Tottori Station. Visitors can reach the shrine by taking a local bus bound for Yoshioka or by taxi, which takes about 10 minutes from the station. The shrine can also be reached on foot in roughly 30 minutes for those interested in walking through the city. Admission to the shrine grounds is free, making it an accessible stop for travelers exploring Tottori's cultural sites.

Absolutely stunning park and shrine. Long walks, streams, parks, bodies of water and plenty to explore.
Experience nature in Tottori city by this ancient shrine and forest walking path with a pond. Be careful of bears in this area.
Peaceful place
I visited on a quiet, clear day in late March. As I stood at the gate before entering the approach to the shrine, I felt a crisp, cool breeze in the air. I'm not sure if it was because it's a power spot or because I'm high up in the mountains, but I felt a strange, comfortable sensation. There was no sound, and it felt like I was one with nature, which was amazing. I hope this place will be protected forever.
