Mizuki Shigeru Road

Mizuki Shigeru Road is a 800-meter street in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, dedicated to the beloved manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, creator of the iconic yokai (Japanese spirit) series GeGeGe no Kitaro. The street was established in 1993 to honor the local artist who was born in the neighboring town of Sakaiminato in 1922 and spent much of his childhood in the area. What began as a modest tribute has grown into one of Japan's most unique themed streets, transforming the entire shopping arcade into a yokai wonderland.

The street features 177 bronze statues of yokai characters from Mizuki's works lining the sidewalks, each intricately detailed and representing different creatures from Japanese folklore. Visitors can explore the Mizuki Shigeru Museum, which houses original artwork, manuscripts, and exhibits detailing the artist's life, including his experiences as a soldier in World War II where he lost his left arm. The museum provides deep insight into how Mizuki's personal history and fascination with the supernatural shaped his legendary manga career.

Walking along the street, visitors encounter themed shops selling yokai merchandise, cafés serving character-themed food and drinks, and various photo opportunities with larger-than-life character installations. The street transforms after dark when illuminated yokai lanterns create an atmospheric evening experience. Special events are held throughout the year, with the most popular being the Yokai Parade during summer festivals.

Sakaiminato is accessible via JR Sakaiminato Line from Yonago Station, with the journey taking approximately 45 minutes. Yonago itself connects to major cities like Osaka and Okayama via limited express trains. The street is located directly adjacent to Sakaiminato Station, making it immediately accessible upon arrival.
