Towada Shrine, Aomori

Towada Shrine stands on the Nakayama Peninsula jutting into Lake Towada in southern Aomori Prefecture, making it one of Japan's most scenic lakeside spiritual sites. The shrine was founded in 807 by military commander Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, though another theory attributes its establishment to Nansobo of Kumano. The shrine honors Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, son of the legendary 12th Emperor Keiko, and is regarded as the home of the water spirit.

The shrine is nestled in a phenomenal cedar forest on the shores of Lake Towada, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims for over 1,200 years. The area has long been considered sacred, with pilgrims traveling from far and wide to visit the lake, eventually giving the nearby town its name Yasumiya (休屋), meaning "resthouse". The shrine originally functioned as a Shinto-Buddhist syncretism site, first visited by mountain ascetics before the faith spread to broader communities.

Visitors approach the shrine through a magnificent cedar grove pathway leading up stone stairs to the main buildings. The shrine's location offers exceptional views across Lake Towada's pristine waters, particularly striking during autumn when the surrounding forests display vibrant fall colors. The shrine serves as one of Yasumiya's few attractions alongside the small nature museum and commemorative statues. The site maintains its mystical character throughout the seasons, from summer's lush greenery to winter's snow-covered tranquility.

Transportation to Towada Shrine requires reaching Yasumiya town on Lake Towada's shore. From JR Hachinohe Station, buses cost ¥2,670 one way and from JR Aomori Station ¥3,090 one way. The Aomori/Hachinohe-Towada two-day free pass offers unlimited bus rides for ¥5,800, providing good value for round-trip visitors. The shrine is within walking distance of Yasumiya town center, making it easily accessible once you reach the lakeside settlement. No admission fee is required to enter the shrine grounds, allowing visitors to explore this historic spiritual site freely while enjoying one of Japan's most beautiful natural settings.
