What exactly is a miko?

Miko are the shrine maidens you see in white robes and red skirts at Japanese shrines. In ancient times they served in a role close to that of a shaman, and today they work as assistants to Shinto priests, which is why they still learn the proper way to behave inside a shrine.

Is the costume provided, and can I wear extra pieces for photos?

Yes. Costume dressing in the white robe and red skirt is part of the experience. During photo time you can also put on a chihaya, a formal jacket worn over the robe, and a kanzashi hair ornament, then take pictures wherever you like in the shrine precinct.

Do I need to know anything about Shinto beforehand?

No. The program is listed as suitable for beginners, and the ceremonial manners, the formal worship, and the short lecture on miko are all taught on the day.

My group speaks different languages. How should we book?

Make a separate booking for each language, for example one on an English staff plan and one on a Chinese staff plan. HIS asks every guest to join the plan in the language they can follow comfortably in daily conversation.

Step into the role of a miko, the shrine maidens who assist Shinto priests, at Takenobu Inari Shrine in central Kyoto.
