Toyonokuni Millennium Heritage Tourism Zone

4.8 (8)Tourist Information CenterTour AgencyTravel AgencyPoint Of InterestServiceEstablishment

The Toyonokuni Millennium Heritage Tourism Zone encompasses eight historic sites across Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, collectively representing over 1,000 years of religious and cultural heritage. Designated as a Japan Heritage site in 2018, this network of temples, shrines, and cultural landscapes illustrates the region's role as a spiritual and political center from the 6th to 19th centuries. The zone takes its name from the ancient province of Toyonokuni, which once covered much of northeastern Kyushu.

The eight constituent sites demonstrate the evolution of Buddhism and Shinto practices in Japan. Usa Jingu, founded in 725 AD, is the head shrine of approximately 40,000 Hachiman shrines nationwide and played a crucial role in merging Buddhist and Shinto traditions. Futago-ji Temple on Mount Futago preserves mountain ascetic practices and houses several Important Cultural Properties. The Kunisaki Peninsula contains numerous stone Buddha carvings and temples that exemplify the unique Rokugo Manzan culture, a syncretic religious tradition combining Buddhism, Shinto, and mountain worship that flourished from the 8th century.

Visitors can explore ancient pilgrimage routes connecting the sites, many of which traverse forested mountains and rural valleys. The Kunisaki Long Trail, a hiking course spanning approximately 137 kilometers, links major temples and allows multi-day trekking through the historic landscape. Stone Buddha statues carved into cliff faces, some dating back 900 years, are accessible along various trails. Seasonal festivals at several sites, particularly at Usa Jingu, offer glimpses into living religious traditions.

The tourism zone is centered around Bungotakada City and extends across the Kunisaki Peninsula. Access is primarily via Oita Airport, located roughly 30 kilometers from central sites, with rental cars recommended for comprehensive exploration as public transportation between sites is limited. Some locations like Usa Jingu are accessible by train via the JR Nippo Line to Usa Station. Most temple and shrine sites request donations rather than fixed admission fees, typically around 300-500 yen, though some facilities like museum areas may charge set entrance fees.

What other travelers are saying about Toyonokuni Millennium Heritage Tourism Zone

I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Toyonokuni Millennium Heritage Tourism Zone, and especially with Mr. Tsutsumi. My adventures in Kunisaki were perfectly organized — from cycling through the rice fields to hiking among ancient temples and sacred caves. I was personally welcomed and introduced to amazing people who shared so much about Kunisaki’s history, spirituality, and nature. Everything was arranged with great care and a genuine sense of local charm. Thanks to this experience, I was able to discover Kunisaki not just as a tourist, but as a truly welcomed guest. I can’t recommend them highly enough to anyone wishing to explore the authentic side of the Kunisaki Peninsula and the wider Ōita region — through engaging activities, meaningful encounters, and unforgettable landscapes. Arigatō gozaimasu!

Eiichiro from the tourism office was unbelievably helpful. In a very constructive/interactive dialogue we set up a list of things I wanted to do (and there are many wonderful things to do in Oita!) and he then he organised everything and set up an itinerary which was perfect. He also gave me various options and recommendations - and even included an excel sheet of all the GPS locations to make it easy for me to drive to! Absolutely wonderful - can't recommend too highly.

We booked the Shiitake mushroom farm tour and farmers lunch. The tour is very unique - we have never been to an organic shiitake farm before! Loved how there is zero waste and no fertilizers and chemicals used. The mushrooms were so delicious and tasty. We had a wonderful time. The farm is beautiful and the farmer Kiyosue is so kind and generous. We also had lunch with at a lovely guesthouse with such a friendly and warm host, Keiko-San. Lunch was delicious. We do not speak Japanese so the tour company helped us to arrange an English speaking guide (Tomoko) who really helped us have a wonderful experience. Tomoko is such a nice person and she is so helpful and kind! The Kunisaki peninsula is not a well known travel destination. But it is truly beautiful and the people are lovely. I hope more people can discover this beautiful area!

We took two groups of 10 explorer scouts to Mr. Yuba's indigo dyeing workshop and we all had a fantastic experience. Tsutsumi-san organized everything for us in advance and we had a very chilled day, creating our own little works of art. I would highly recommend this activity.
