Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square

4.5 (736)Point Of InterestEstablishment

Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square showcases Japan's rich heritage of traditional craftsmanship in the heart of Tokyo's fashionable Aoyama district. Established by the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, this cultural facility opened in 1977 to preserve and promote authentic Japanese crafts recognized under the Traditional Crafts Industry Promotion Law.

The square serves as both a museum and marketplace, representing craft traditions from all 47 prefectures of Japan. Traditional crafts on display include textiles, ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork, woodwork, and paper goods, each certified as authentic traditional crafts with production techniques passed down through generations. These items must meet strict criteria including the use of traditional materials, predominantly handmade production methods, and historical continuity of at least 100 years.

Visitors can browse and purchase authentic traditional crafts in the ground-floor gallery shop, which rotates its selection to feature different regional specialties throughout the year. The second floor houses exhibition spaces that regularly change their displays to highlight specific crafts, artisans, or regional traditions. Many items available include Kyoto silk textiles, Arita porcelain, Wajima lacquerware, and Bizen pottery. Demonstrations and workshops by master craftspeople are occasionally held, allowing visitors to observe traditional techniques firsthand or try their hand at simple craft-making activities.

The facility is located in Akasaka, approximately 5 minutes on foot from Aoyama-itchome Station, accessible via the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, and Toei Oedo Line. From Nogizaka Station on the Chiyoda Line, the walk takes about 7 minutes. Admission to the exhibition areas is free, though prices for craft items in the shop vary widely depending on the piece, ranging from affordable small souvenirs to high-end artisan works worth hundreds of thousands of yen.

What other travelers are saying about Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square

Great crafts store covering all sorts of crafts from across Japan. They also occasionally have live demonstrations. We got to see two different types of life demonstrations, one for a small Japanese style dolls, and another for traditional jewelry making made on cast steel with leaf inlay. Every small craft representation has an explanation on the history of the crafting question and alsoan identification of from where in Japan this type of craft is from it is a quiet store not recommended for people with very young children who like to run around.

I am so glad I came here! This is probably the best place to buy the highest quality selection of beautiful artisanal crafts in Tokyo! However, be aware that this is an expensive shop. The majority of the items were each above ¥10,000. That being said, because each piece is unique, the average price of what is available might vary greatly depending on what the artists produce. The entire store was like a museum where you could touch things! That said, I found a small selection of beautiful pieces under ¥10,000. I really wish I could’ve bought the entire store! Here is my loot. I have no buyer's remorse. I only wish I could go back and have bought more. (The gorgeous lacquerware tray was ¥22,000. The rest range from ¥4500-¥7000.)

Probably the best shop in Tokyo for finding a wide variety of high-quality Japanese crafts. There is something here for all budgets, but no matter the price you will get something well worth the money. Many pieces here left me in awe. The hardest part about shopping here was choosing what to take home, because there was so much I wanted. The staff is professional and getting a tax-free discount is painless.

During our time in Japan, we hadn't found many souvenirs that we wanted to bring back for our family. My husband did a quick google search and stumbled across this store. It had such beautiful pieces that we liked and ended up finishing our souvenir shopping. I would highly recommend it while in Tokyo.
