Tsukiji Fish Market

4.2 (55356)WholesalerPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Tsukiji Fish Market, located in Tokyo, Japan, was one of the largest and most famous fish markets in the world. It opened in 1935 and became a bustling hub for seafood trade and a popular tourist attraction. The market was divided into two main sections: the inner market and the outer market.

The inner market was where licensed wholesale dealers operated. It was known for its early morning tuna auctions, which were famous for their fast-paced bidding and large, fresh catches. These auctions typically started around 5:30 AM, and only a limited number of visitors were allowed to watch from designated areas.

The outer market was more accessible to the public and featured small shops and restaurants. Here, visitors could find a variety of products, including fresh seafood, produce, kitchen tools, and other food items. Many small eateries offered sushi and other Japanese dishes made with ingredients sourced directly from the market.

In 2018, the inner wholesale market activities moved to a new location called Toyosu Market due to aging infrastructure and space constraints at Tsukiji. However, the outer market remains open at its original location, continuing to attract both locals and tourists who enjoy its vibrant atmosphere and fresh seafood offerings.

Overall, Tsukiji Fish Market was not just a place to buy fish but also an important cultural landmark in Tokyo that showcased Japan's deep connection to seafood cuisine.

What other travelers are saying about Tsukiji Fish Market

This place gave my family one of our best food experiences in Japan – and at an unbelievably cheap price, if you know the trick! We arrived around 11am and the market was already packed with people. We were told they close around 1pm, so it was getting close to the end of the day. Instead of buying straight away, we decided to walk around first to check the prices and compare the different stalls. It’s very tempting to buy from the fancy-looking shops, but I’m so glad we explored a bit more. That’s when we found a small, simple stall run by an elderly man. No fancy sushi displays, no stylish plating – just honest, fresh tuna belly sashimi being cut right in front of us. The portions were incredibly generous, and the price was literally half of what the more commercial stalls were charging. He didn’t even have tables; it felt like he mainly sells to locals. Even though he couldn’t really speak English, he was very friendly and tried his best to accommodate us. We ended up standing next to his fridge eating fresh tuna sashimi until we were completely full. It was such an authentic and memorable experience. We’ve been to several markets around Japan, but this was by far our best discovery. Amazing food, great value, and a truly local vibe. If you visit, take the time to explore – you might just find the same hidden gem we did! Highly recommended for anyone who loves fresh sashimi and real local experiences.

Such a fun place to eat, shop, and explore! There’s an amazing variety of food, from fresh seafood like melt-in-your-mouth tuna, sushi, oysters, and grilled scallops, to sweet treats like the popular egg desserts that are totally worth the wait. The market is lively, colorful, and full of energy, making it a great spot for photos as well. While prices have gone up and some shops feel more geared toward tourists, most of the food is still delicious. Shops do close early, so it’s best to come in the morning, but even visiting in the afternoon can be rewarding with some great discounts. Overall, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy fresh food and soak in the vibrant market atmosphere.
If you’re a food lover, this iconic Tokyo destination belongs at the top of your travel list. Tsukiji Outer Market is a vibrant, bustling food paradise that delivers an unforgettable culinary experience for everyone — from seasoned sushi aficionados to casual explorers. From the moment you step into the maze of narrow streets lined with stalls and restaurants, you’ll feel the energy and colour of one of Japan’s most legendary food districts. There’s a reason people call it Japan’s Food Town — the mix of fresh seafood, local snacks, kitchen shops, and traditional eats is nothing short of spectacular. Fresh, Affordable Seafood & Sushi The seafood here is as fresh as it gets — most of it delivered daily from the renowned Toyosu Market — and that freshness shines in every bite, especially the sushi and sashimi. Whether you’re grabbing a classic nigiri plate, a giant kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), or sampling oysters and grilled tuna skewers, the quality is consistently excellent and often surprisingly affordable for Tokyo standards. Something for Everyone It’s not just seafood — while fresh fish and sushi are major highlights, you’ll also find a dazzling variety of street food and snacks. From fluffy tamagoyaki (Japanese sweet omelette) and grilled seafood to hearty miso soups and sweet pastries, the market offers mouthwatering options at every turn. Lively Atmosphere & Local Culture Part of what makes Tsukiji so special is the atmosphere — a lively blend of locals and travellers exploring, chatting with vendors, picking up kitchen tools, knives, and other unique Japanese goods, and enjoying food on the spot. Go early in the morning to experience it at its best and beat the crowds before noon. Perfect for All Types of Visitors Whether you’re a sushi purist, a curious traveller, or visiting with family, there’s something here for everyone. It’s educational, adventurous, delicious — and one of the best ways to dive into Tokyo’s food culture.
Came here for breakfast in the morning. It wasn’t as crowded as before, though there was still a queue for tamagoyaki, and toro sushi was popular too. I bought mine from one of the shops without the long queue. The sushi tasted decent, but since it was served outdoors, both the fish and rice were quite cold, ¥3000 for six pieces. I still prefer sitting inside a sushi restaurant and enjoying sush. Overall, it was a nice experience — especially in winter, having cold sushi with an iced yuzu drink.
A food lover’s paradise! Tsukiji Outer Market is an absolute gem and one of the highlights of any trip to Tokyo. Even though the wholesale market moved to Toyosu, the outer market is still thriving with the same energy, incredible freshness, and unbeatable seafood. The food here is simply amazing—some of the best I’ve ever had. From silky, melt-in-your-mouth otoro sushi and perfectly creamy uni to grilled scallops dripping with butter, fresh sashimi bowls bursting with flavor, and sweet tamagoyaki egg omelets, every bite is pure perfection. Everything tastes like it was caught that morning, and the variety of street stalls and small restaurants means you can hop from one delicious spot to the next. The atmosphere is lively, authentic, and full of friendly vendors happy to share their craft. Come hungry, wander the alleys, and treat yourself to breakfast or lunch here—you won’t regret it. A true Tokyo must-do!
