Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach

Last updated Mar 12, 2026

Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach, located in Ichinomiya, Chiba Prefecture, gained international prominence when it hosted the Olympic surfing debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July 2021. This marked a historic moment as surfing became an Olympic sport for the first time, with the beach serving as the venue for both men's and women's competitions. The selection of Tsurigasaki reflected Japan's strong surfing culture and the beach's reputation for producing quality waves.

The beach sits along the Pacific Ocean approximately 70 kilometers east of Tokyo, positioned to receive consistent swells that make it one of Japan's premier surfing destinations. The coastline extends for several kilometers and features both beach breaks and reef breaks, creating varied conditions suitable for different skill levels. The area has been a gathering place for Japanese surfers since the 1960s, when surfing culture first took root in the country, and Ichinomiya has developed a reputation as a surfing town with numerous surf shops, schools, and related businesses.

Visitors to Tsurigasaki can engage in surfing lessons through local surf schools, with equipment rental readily available along the beachfront. The beach is open to the public year-round, though the most popular surfing season runs from late spring through autumn when water temperatures are warmer and wave conditions are most reliable. Non-surfers can enjoy beach walks, observe surfers riding the waves, or visit the nearby coastal parks. The Olympic legacy is evident in improved facilities and beach access points constructed for the games.

Transportation to Tsurigasaki is straightforward from Tokyo. Take the JR Sotobo Line from Tokyo Station to Kazusa-Ichinomiya Station, a journey of approximately 60 to 70 minutes. From the station, the beach is about 1.5 kilometers away, reachable by local bus, taxi, or a 20-minute walk. By car, the beach is accessible via the Kujukuri Toll Road, with parking facilities available near the beach. Admission to the beach is free, though surf schools and equipment rentals charge separate fees.

The amazing beach that was the venue for the surfing competition for the first time in the history of Olympic history. Luckily I was appointed as volunteer here for Tokyo Olympic 2020. That gave me opportunity to roam around and enjoy the natural beauty of mighty waves. 🌊 People say this is the best place for surfing across the entire Japan. So if you are nearby and fond of either sea or surfing, 🏄🏄‍♂️ don’t miss the opportunity to be here.

This is a very beautiful beach with a Tori gate on the beach. It’s bee built as a surfing beach for the Olympic Games and the waves are quite strong. A must visit to view the sunrise and sunset.

We have driven here to find absolutely no facilities apart from the sea and the beach. Tsunami deterrent concrete sticking into the sea blocked the view and destroyed the beach for tourism. Somehow there was an unpleasant smell in the air so we had to leave. Couldn’t believe this place was designated for Tokyo Olympic Game for Surfing. Surfers looked more like potato-washing at the shore (芋洗い) than a “Surfing”.

Tsurigaike Beach is a popular spot for surfers. I remember the waves being high, the wind strong, and the weather bad. Despite this, there were still many surfers because it's famous as the venue for the surfing competition in the 2020 Olympics.
