TV Asahi Headquarters

TV Asahi Headquarters stands in the Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo's Minato ward, serving as the broadcasting center for one of Japan's major television networks since 2003. The building was designed by renowned architect Fumihiko Maki as part of the larger Roppongi Hills development project, which transformed this area into a modern cultural and business hub. TV Asahi, established in 1957, chose this location to consolidate its operations in a state-of-the-art facility that would embody the future of Japanese broadcasting.

The headquarters represents a significant cultural landmark in Japan's media landscape, as TV Asahi produces some of the country's most popular dramas, anime series, and news programs. The network has been instrumental in shaping Japanese popular culture through its entertainment programming and maintains a strong presence in national broadcasting. The building itself exemplifies contemporary Japanese architecture with its glass-and-steel design that integrates seamlessly into the Roppongi Hills complex.

Visitors can explore the TV Asahi Shop on the first floor, which sells merchandise related to popular shows, including anime goods, drama-related items, and network-branded products. The headquarters occasionally hosts special exhibitions and events tied to current programming. While studio tours are not regularly available to the general public, the area around the building features photo opportunities with statues and displays of popular anime characters from TV Asahi programs, particularly those from long-running series like Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan.

The headquarters is located within walking distance from Roppongi Station, accessible via the Hibiya Line and Oedo Line, approximately 5 minutes on foot. Azabu-juban Station on the Oedo Line is also nearby. Entry to the building's publicly accessible areas, including the shop, is free, though special events may require advance registration or tickets. The location within Roppongi Hills means visitors can easily combine their visit with the nearby Mori Art Museum, observation deck, shopping, and dining facilities in the same complex.

Frequently Asked Questions

TV Asahi does not offer regular public studio tours. Live show recordings occasionally accept audience members through advance lottery applications on the official TV Asahi website. Only the first-floor shop and lobby areas are freely accessible without registration.

The shop sells merchandise from TV Asahi programs including Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, and Precure character goods, drama and variety show items, DVDs, books, network-branded souvenirs, and limited-edition seasonal products.

Yes. The building features anime character statues and displays, and the shop stocks toys and merchandise appealing to children. However, interactive experiences are limited compared to dedicated entertainment venues.

A visit to the publicly accessible areas typically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your interest in browsing the shop and taking photos with character displays. Since the headquarters is part of Roppongi Hills, most visitors combine it with other attractions in the complex, making it easy to spend half a day or more in the entire area exploring the Mori Art Museum, shopping centers, and observation deck.

Special exhibitions and promotional events occur periodically, tied to new programs or show anniversaries. These require checking the official TV Asahi website for announcements and advance registration when necessary.

Traveler reviews

A fun spot to visit to escape the heat and get some lively pictures! There are little shops for gifts as well as numerous capsule machines. Photography by Jason Taylor

Many viewers feel that TV Asahi’s reporting not only lacks balance, but also appears to undermine Japan while echoing narratives favorable to the Chinese Communist Party. Coverage related to China often minimizes serious concerns, while Japan is portrayed in an unnecessarily negative light. This kind of framing risks resembling propaganda rather than independent journalism. A major broadcaster should maintain clear editorial independence and present fair, fact-based reporting from multiple perspectives.

Doraemon, Sin chan & all! Too bad they have only 1 or 2 staffs who can speak English. We had problems purchasing tix from their website, no language selection at all ☹️ so needed their assistance to assist, so it was troublesome. But we had fun here!

I had heard positive reviews about the gift shop at TV Asahi and decided to check it out while I was in the area. The gift shop, however, turned out to be smaller than I had anticipated. I spent about 15 minutes browsing through the limited variety of merchandise but unfortunately did not find anything that caught my eye.

Just here for Doraemon stuffs. There's also other characters like Crayon Shin Chan. TV Asahi is among the biggest TV broadcasters in the nation. Various banners of local TV shows were on display. Plus some minor merchandise.
