Walking across Uji Bridge 宇治橋 was a beautiful and memorable experience. The gentle view of the blue river flowing underneath creates a peaceful atmosphere, and the scenery on both sides of the bridge feels very refreshing. It’s one of those places where you naturally slow down to enjoy the surroundings.
The bridge itself has a simple and elegant design, and the combination of nature, water, and the historical town of Uji makes the walk very pleasant. When the sunlight reflects on the river, the color looks clear and calming, almost like a painting.
Crossing Uji Bridge is not only a way to move between sights, but also a relaxing moment to appreciate the natural beauty of Uji. It’s a lovely experience and adds an amazing highlight to any visit in the area. 🌿✨
Located at the front gate of Byodo-in walking street. It’s surrounded by hills and very windy when we visited during early of March. The river water very clear. Nice to take photos when you are nearby.

As Kumiko from Hibike! Euphonium biggest fan, going here was a special feeling i want to cherish forever.
The summertime skies are the supporting actor enhancing all the experiences. I went here 2 times during my japan trip and the ambience, liveliness, and riverside atmosphere are so mesmerizing. I could sit here right in the place where kumiko shouted umaku naritai all day every day!
Uji Bridge is one of the oldest documented bridges in Japan, with its origins dating back to around 646. It has been rebuilt many times over the centuries due to floods and warfare, yet it has consistently retained its historical role as both a practical crossing and a cultural landmark. The current structure, completed in 1996, reflects traditional aesthetics, featuring wooden railings and decorative bronze finials (giboshi).
Historically, Uji Bridge was a strategic location, most famously associated with the Battle of Uji in the late Heian period, making it a site deeply embedded in Japan’s military past. At the same time, it holds strong literary significance: the bridge and its surroundings are closely linked to the final chapters of The Tale of Genji, set in Uji, one of the cornerstones of classical Japanese literature.
The bridge connects key cultural sites such as Byōdō-in and Ujigami Shrine (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and remains an integral part of daily life in Uji.
Uji Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Japan. It is easily accessible by taking the JR train from Kyoto Station to Uji Station and walking a bit towards Byodoin Temple. The bridge is located near the road to the temple. The atmosphere here is very good, whether you stand and enjoy the view, take pictures on the bridge, or walk down the stairs to take pictures by the river, you will hear the sound of flowing water. It feels very close to nature. However, there are quite a few people.
