Yabo Tenmangu Shrine, Kunitachi

Yabo Tenmangu Shrine stands as the oldest Tenmangu shrine in eastern Japan, located in Kunitachi, western Tokyo. Founded in 903 AD by Michitake Sugawara, the third son of the revered scholar Sugawara no Michizane, the shrine was built to honor his father when Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu. The shrine is dedicated to Tenjin, the deified form of Sugawara no Michizane, who is worshipped as the god of learning and scholarship.

As one of the Three Major Tenmangu Shrines in the Kanto region alongside Yushima Tenjin and Kameido Tenjin, Yabo Tenmangu holds particular historical significance as the birthplace of Japan's first prayers for traffic safety. The shrine was strategically positioned near the Koshu Kaido highway, an important post road during the Edo period when neighboring Fuchu served as the administrative center of the Kanto province. The shrine has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan and a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo.

Visitors experience a tranquil atmosphere within the tree-covered grounds, a notable contrast to the busier shrines in central Tokyo. The shrine's plum garden features approximately 350 plum trees that bloom from mid-February to early March, with a dedicated Ume Festival during peak season. Students frequently visit to pray for academic success, while the shrine also attracts those seeking blessings for safe travel.

The Teiryou Festival held annually on November 3 features spectacular fire rituals and the unique Uso-kae Shinji ceremony, where participants exchange small wooden birds believed to transform misfortune into good luck. A Grand Festival occurs once every five years, featuring elaborate traditional processions and performances.

The shrine is located at 5209 Yabo, Kunitachi City, Tokyo. Access is straightforward via JR Nambu Line to Yaho Station, followed by a 3-minute walk south from the station. From central Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Tachikawa Station, then transfer to the Nambu Line. Admission to the shrine grounds is free, though prayer services require a fee. Parking facilities are available on-site.
